Yes I can say I have one series at a time that reigns over all my interests. Once it was Pokemon. Another four years and it's Digimon. Two years it's Sailor Moon, then DBZ, then Yu-Gi-Oh, and it goes on and on. My most recent ruler of the interests was Fruits Basket. Seeing how it's so popular I could tell it was going to be like another Pokemon! (Not completely like it, but same popularity status, see?) I've come up with a short list of all the series that I've gone bonkers over. Here they are: (and be aware that at some points, the reign on the interests was tied, meaning I was obsessed with two or three at a time.)
Pokemon: Ah...good old Pokemon...a forever classic! I don't know how others came to be introduced to anime, but it was Pokemon for me. I remember when it all started! My little brother was reading the first novel put out by Tracy West (if I remember correctly?). I had heard him and others at school talking about it so one day I asked, what is Pokemon anyway? He got me reading the novel and I was hooked after reading! It was like I knew the joys of excitement for the first time. After that I read more as more came out. I learned that a show was out and airing on KidsWB. However, I didn't have cable. So I went and bought a video in a grocery store! It was my first time listening to their voices and I was soooo excited. The rest follows the lines of, "I watched more and more when we got cable running and just couldn't stop." You can imagine how excited we were when the first movie came out to theaters, right? My Pokemon craze lasted about 4-5 years as a matter of fact. However, Pokemon started to be looked down upon, and I went with the flow. To this day, I still watch Pokemon, y'know? I just don't watch episodes. I only watch the feature length movies. Now I wish they would just include Japanese versions too when they release them on DVD!
Digimon: One hot summer day, I had nothing to do. I had an old TV with some channels on it, but not much. I turned it on and I switched to Fox. It was on Digimon. Now I had had some ill feelings towards Digimon before because it had the "Oh my gosh, copied Pokemon" feeling to it. However, I watched it and had to stay tune after that. I will remind myself now: it was T.K. that got me interested! It was when the kids had been seperated onto parts of the broken island and T.K. and Patamon were all alone. From there, it just got more interesting. I loved the part when Patamon digivolved in Angemon! It had me in sudden depression when Angemon was disappearing. They leave the island to go to the Continent and from there I just had to watch. My Digi phase lasted 2-2.5 years.
Sailor Moon: Ah...the magic girl phase! It was my cousin that got me interested in this, and untimately, all of anime. The first Sailor Moon I watched was the third movie. I believe it was the first movie after that. My brother got me an episode video and my mom got me some Sailor Moon dolls for Christmas. I think it was also the romance in it that got me hooked too. Anyway...I favored that over all other series at the time. It lasted until I was introduced to DBZ! (1.5 years...)
Dragonball Z: Once again...it was my cousin that got me interested in this. And also once again, it was because of the small ones! Goten and Trunks! Even though the first episode I watched was full of action, it had a Goten and Trunks moment. It was when they were going to where the fight with the unborn Majin Buu was. Goten had to go to the bathroom................... Kinda weird way to become interested in a series such as DBZ, huh? But it wasn't just them I adored. After a little while, I was able to go back and watch episodes from before. I stayed tune every night to Toonami and had my half-hour of DBZ. I must admit I had a romantic outlook on a few things. I'll bet that if I go back to see what it truly was that got me interested, it was probably Gohan and Videl's friendship. Still, there were certain events that kept me going. I, as a former-obsessed DBZ fan am ashamed to say this: I've only seen, like, 50% of all the episodes! I watched the whole Buu saga thing, almost all the first season, not even half of the second, a bit of the android and Cell sagas, and the saga just before Buu. I should've seen all the episodes, right?! Oh well...my obsession lasted 3 years.
Inuyasha: Cool series! Way cool! I started watching this when I saw a preview on Adult Swim. The first one I watched was the second half of the second episode. I was still confused as to what was happening. I watched the seventh episode the next time I had access to cable. Once again...romance fit in perfectly! When I had access to cable, I recorded every night and saw all of the first season and a bit of the second. However, while Adult Swim was rerunning episodes 1-26, my cable was turned off. I was missing the continuation! I didn't have a DVD player, so when the first movie was released, I went to my neighbor's house and watched it with them. Even though I couldn't watch anymore episodes, I continued to google it and become absorbed into it. Sadly to say that by the time the third movie came out, other interests had come along to steal Inuyasha's place. I like Inuyasha still...I just don't hold it as a top interest.
Yu-Gi-Oh!: I thought this was stupid! But once again, I found myself bored and had nothing to do, so I turned on the TV (cable again). I watched the first episode of the virtual reality game saga (three episodes long). Kaiba had been trapped in his own virtual reality game and Mokuba sought out Yugi to help rescue him. So the gang goes on another rescue and in the end, have to deal with this big five-headed dragon! I watched on as each one of Yugi's teamates was defeated and disappeared. The last one to be struck down was Mokuba protecting his brother. I think it was that scene right there! Sibling love...one of my favorite things in Yu-Gi-Oh. I liked the family relationship between Kaiba and Mokuba most. It's why the Noah saga is my favorite of them all. (That's when they're all pulled into a virtual world...again. Mokuba is kidnapped when the fifth enemy comes and as the battle goes on, we get to see more of the pasts of these two brothers. And in the end...Mokuba is tricked by an illusion and is brainwashed by Noah! I was like, "nooooooo" when Noah and Kaiba were dualing and just as Kaiba was about to give a finishing attack, Mokuba steps in and protects Noah. If I could find that episode and the one after it in Japanese, I would most definantly watch them!) I lost cable again and that lead to me seeking out Japanese releases. I watched from 198-201 and couldn't find any after that. My interest still stood strong. It lasted 2-2.5 years. Fruits Basket took it over.
Fruits Basket: Everyone who likes Furuba should know why I like this. If I could give my own reasons, it's because I wanted to see what the whole curse was about and who ended up with Tohru in the end. I voted for Kyo and I got my results. Tohru and Kyo married (see chapter 136). It's most recent and it lasted 2.5 years. After I realized it was coming to an end, I guess it got me depressed and I lossened up on it. However, it was also because of another series.
Fullmetal Alchemist: I couldn't watch another episode after DVD 2. I took a long break from it! One day in June of this year, I was on youtube and had nothing to watch. So I just suddenly looked up FMA the movie and it brought me the entire movie! I decided to watch it. I got up to the part when Hoenheim (spelled wrong?) was chomped by Envy in dragon form. I had to get off at that time, but I continued the next day. Yes...it was the movie that brought me back. I wanted to find out how Ed ended up in our world in the first place. When did Al get his body back? What happened with Roy's eye? All these questions came up and I decided to borrow all the available DVDs and watch them. Because of this, Furuba went away...and FMA went up! I soon learned that the movie was coming out very soon and saved the money I had earned over the summer to buy it when it came out (along with DVDs 11-13). Unlike all the others, this only lasted at it's maximum for 3 months. I got back to a series I had been keeping up with and suddenly felt it had taken over. It's called Special A.
Special A: It's my current interest, but it's no obsession. In fact, I think my obsession quality had dulled over the years. Right now I'm translating a chapter of SA and trying to make sure it's good enough. It's a good thing that not a lot of people demand recent chapters from Japan or I would be overworked (or I could get lucky and have another person translating it instead of me). I think that if I don't obsess over SA like I did with all the rest, it may last a long time to come.
Those are my main reigns! I'm sure that with Bleach coming, I could be in for another one...
