I was lying in bed today after reading Ouran High School Host Club volume 8. It also crossed my mind that I needed to update my S.A. group soon. Then it hit me. OHSHC and SA have things in common! When I really thought about it, even some of the voices are the same.
Ouran High School HC and S.A. have one major thing in common: the setting. They both take place in rich schools, with rich teenagers and the luxuries they seem to have. One school has a host club which just about everyone admires (or maybe just the girls, but the simple fact is that it has something in it that is admired). The other school has a special class made up of the top students in the school and everyone admires them. You see where I’m getting at?
The second thing I could come up with is the number of main characters. When I say main characters I mean the ones that were introduced many times before they finally stopped! Ouran High School HC has seven hosts in the club (one being a girl in disguise). Each host club member is in the A class, meaning they’re in the top classes of each grade. S.A. has seven students in the S.A. class. Each one is of highest rank, grade-wise.
The third thing I thought about was the main female characters. Both Haruhi (Host Club) and Hikari (S.A.) are commoners going to school with rich kids. They both fit in pretty good. They aren’t bullied (most of the time) and the peers around them accept them. The only thing that separates these two are that one has short hair and the other has long, and one (Haruhi) is carefree and says something like, “What will be will be”, while the other isn’t like that. (Did you notice their names start with the letter H?)
When I was trying to find similarities between the boys of the Host Club and members of the S.A. class I was at a loss. No one seems to have similarities. Unless…you count what their parent’s professions are. When it comes to that, there is one similarity. Tamaki (Host Club) and Tadashi (S.A.) have a parent that is the director of their school. (Did you notice their names start with a T?) You can also count their personalities. Kyoya (Host Club) is all serious and all work. Kei (S.A.) is just the same: serious and all work. (Notice how both their names start with a K.) And alas…both series have twins in them too. However, the two different pairs of twins don’t act the same! Hikaru and Kaoru (Host Club) and Jun and Megumi (S.A.) are completely different. Hikaru and Kaoru are both boys who get to the girls by putting on a homo act. (Or is it real…? I d’know.) Jun and Megumi are opposite genders and don’t, in any way, put on a sibling admiration like the other two do. If they attract the attention of anyone, it’s by their adorable-ness. They both adore Ryu though (a member of the S.A.).
I thought about their voices after thinking this over. The Japanese voice of Hikaru is also the voice of Kei. Cool, huh? I don’t remember if this is correct, but I think the voice of Ritsu (the yankee-with-the-red-hair-softie-on-the-inside guy from Host Club) is also the voice of Ryu. Or was it Yahiro? I can’t remember, but I swear I remember seeing that information for one of the S.A.
I love both OHSHC and S.A.! They’re both so similar and yet have their differences. They both have serious moments, which soon turn into funny moments. It’s always interesting how the series bring in rich kid events and it always makes me wish, “I wish I was Haruhi/Hikari…” Oh well…WAIT! This was a vs. entry. All I did was compare them!
*Edit: The voice of Ritsu isn't one of the voices of the S.A. But the voice of Yahiro (S.A.) is most definantly the voice of someone in episode 22 of OHSHC!*
