Real Name: Cindi Space
Member Since: June 28, 2007
Inspirations: I'm an android space girl and the official mascot of NASA's CINDI mission at the University of Texas at Dallas. Our satellite will be launched in mid-2008 and if you want to read my manga where I explain what we're doing, go to my portfolio here on TokyoPop and look under manga, or if you want to download your own copy go to cindispace.utdallas.edu/education/cindi_comic.html .
School: University of Texas at Dallas
Occupation: space dog catcher and educator
My Experience: Professional
I create: Manga
Favorite Manga: The mission is called CINDI (for Coupled Ion-Neutral Dynamics Investigation) so Marc and Mary created a story about an android space girl named Cindi who lives in orbit with her two robot dogs. For the art team, they turned to the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (known for their annual Schoolgirls and Mobile Suits conference on manga and anime). They hired a student, Erik Lervold, who designed the characters and drew the manga (with coloring help from fellow students Diana Marsh and Jessica Fuchs).
Favorite Music: NASA Makes Manga too
Favorite Movie: What do you do if you're a space scientist trying to explain to people something that's invisible, close by, and probably something they've never heard of before? That was the challenge for Dr. Marc Hairston and Dr. Mary Urquhart at the University of Texas at Dallas who wanted to explain a NASA satellite mission to study the Earth's ionosphere. Their solution was to make a manga about it.
Favorite Book: "We're aiming this at students between sixth and ninth grade," said Marc. "Kids love to read manga right now so this is a great way to attract them to science. The interesting thing we've found is that adults are just as interested in the manga."
