I'm having trouble with avatars

When I upload an avatar, I get the dreaded red X. WTF, TP?

I hate using avatars that ten million other people are using so what the hell's up?

My avatars fit the space maximum, they are decent. And most importantly of all, I want to use my own avatars.........................................

Why can't things just work the way they are supposed to?
