The Trees We’ve all come to wonder Why trees are so well They give us the air that we breathe And the pine that we smell But a long time ago When the earth was still new The trees moved around Just like me and you They came out of the ground And lived their own lives They had siblings and cousins And husbands and wives But one day it changed They way the trees were They became dormant And there was not a cure It all started when The Great Oak Tree said “The time has come For our roots to tread!” Its children cried out In utmost surprise “Was he telling the truth? Or were its wise words just lies?” They refused to move on They cemented their roots Into the dry earth Like mud coated boots “Believe me, my friends!” The Oak Tree spread its wide leaves “If you stay, you will perish! Is what I believe!” The trees were too stubborn They prepared to always stay But the whir of a machine Changed, did their ways They fled from their field In a clutter of roots With the rumbling noise Making clouds of black soot Where would they go? The field was their home! So playfully roam? They found an old place Filled with green grass They declared it their home In a quick, happy flash For a while they lived In brand new green flowers Keeping the air clean With all of their powers But all was not well The saws were still coming The machines clawing soil The engines still moaning They got there so quick With their jaws snapping shut They crunched the tree bark Leaving a path, a wide rut Soon, all the trees Were gone with the air The machines conquered earth Turned into their lair The clean smelling sky Turned gray and dirty so The home of the trees Became house laws, you know The Great Oak Tree saw From his perch in the clouds Disappointed so greatly He messaged his crowd He told them to stay And give up their souls For machines would just come And turns trees into holes And they listened of course To the Great’s new demand They found suitable places And seeped into the land Never again did they speak Or ever move about They stood tall, wide, but silent Until the machines made their route I mean sure, sometimes The trees would grow back From little capped acorns But a mind, the trees did lack And that’s how it happened Why the trees are so still The world changed so much Green fields the trees should fill “Who did this?” You cry With you angry dear friend Well, I suppose I could tell you Maybe a hand you could lend You Of this horrible tragedy You brother or sister right now Could be taking away the trees’ living free We’ve all come to wonder Why the trees are so still Standing so motionless On top of the dead dreary hill
