Log 1
I, David Jones, a young man of 16 as my mother says, have had a very rough year. A rough year indeed. So many things happened, enough things to have filled up a life time. So, to avoid my tale of my becoming of a Sky Pirate being forgotten, I have prepared this Log, the Captain's Log. And into this Log, I will pour my history into it...
It started on an ordinary day, everything was completely normal. No sign of anything new, just another day to live through. And at that time that was fine for me. I was only 15 that day, my birthday a week away, and 16 is the age where boys became 'men', where they leave home and get a job and make their own life. My mother, well my foster mother, I'm an orphan, she woke me up rather arubtly that morning.
"Wake up Dave!" she called, "Don't make me have to dump a bucket of water on your head... again."
I quickly got up and got dressed, knowing she wasn't kidding. She isn't the kindest of all mothers, but she is my mother, and I must care for her and my 'siblings'. Our mother runs a foster home in our small town of Se Tarip. There are 15 of us, myself included. We all do some work around the house, except for the youngest four we recieved last month. The elder three are all 7 years of age, the youngest only 2 years old. The other 10 range from the ages of 8 to 11, except for my sister who's 14, a year younger than me. I being the oldest of the lot, do the most work, and the most challenging of chores.
I was doing my chores on the farm that morning. I was milking the cows, when a loud crash startled the cows and caused the one I was milking to knock me backwards into the haystack. I looked around and saw the trio of 7 year olds. 777 may be a lucky number to some, but they made it unlucky. They were our trouble makers, Josh, Mark and Will. They are triplets, and they do everything together. They had spooked the cows for fun, and to tick me off. As soon as they saw that I had seen them, they ran off like a shot. I followed them and quickly caught up with them, and held them captive in my arms. I am very quick and strong, and I've been getting requests from several men who run shops who require a lot of physical labor. I was the talk of the town and everyone was familiar with my name, and everyone loved me. But this would all come to an end soon...
"Why'd you three do that?" I yelled. I sounded angreier than I really was, it was the only way those three would listen to me.
"Sorry Dave! We're sorry! Just don't tell mum!"
"Or Silvia! Especially not Silvia!"
Silvia is my sister. She's the kindest person you could meet, but you wouldn't want to see her mad. She can make your life hell if you tick her off. But I just made the trio herd the cows back in. They complained and cursed at me, but they did their work. After they finished, they had a request, which wasn't an unusual request for me.
"Hey Dave!" Josh exclaimed in his impatient tone, "Tell us one of your stories."
"Yeah!" screamed Mark in response. Mark was always loud, even when he tried to be quiet.
"The captain defeated." Will said quietly. Will was the silent one, a kid of few words. But even though what he said sometimes made no sense, he really is an intelligent kid. I gave in and told my made up story of the time I defeated Davey Jones, a notorious pirate of the 'Old World'. The 'Old World', a place of great mystery. The Old World is what was a great sphere, a planet that was explored to its fullest or so the men of that time thought. In 2010, a massive catastrophe lifted most of the world's continents to the sky, causing many of the people to die. Those left strived on and created the New World. They created a new government and everything. But with every good, there is an evil to go with it. Soon there were mass numbers of outlaws who formed their own groups. These people came to be known as Sky Pirates. Sky Pirates are the most hated people of the New World. THey cause chaos everywhere they go. These were the people I hated the most. But the Navy, the New World's army, kept the Sky Pirates in order. I had decided that once I became 20, I would register for the Navy, and join to fight Sky Piraters. That day may have come if that man didn't come that night...
It started storming once supper was finished. I had just gotten back from putting the animals back in their pens, and I was sopping wet. My mother and I were warming up by the fire, when a huge knock that nearly busted our door open. Both of us jumped in shock. At first we thought it was the strom, but when it came again and again, I got up to get the door. Once I opened it, a man fell forward and collapsed. I was helping him up, when my hand clasped someing in one of his pockets. A shot rang out, a hole was blasted through one of his pockets and part of our floor was blown away. This caused me to shove him backwards. As he fell backwards I saw a crest embedded into his cloak. The crest was a demonic skull with a crown on it. The man was a Sky Pirate. I leapt on him and pinned him to the ground.
"Call the Navy, mother! This man is a Sky Pirate!" I called to my mother, but she just stood there and covered her face and shook her head. Then the man started talking.
"Please... kid, please let me in. I only need a place to rest for the night."
He broke free of my grip which surprised me seeing how he looked starved. He then started ridding himself of his arsernal of weapons, tossing them out into the storm.
"Look! I'll send them down to the ol' world if I have to, just let me stay a night and I'll be gone," he said hurriedly and stammering. The man was shaking like mad, freezing. He wouldn't have made the night if my mother didn't force me to let him in. I put out my longest protest against my mother ever. In fact it was only my second protest, first one being when I was forced to go a night without supper when we were very low on food. I was only 4 then.
My mother made me prepare the man a meal as my punishment. As I was preparing the meal, I overheard a part of their conversation.
"...so, what brings you back here Jason?"
"Mutiny, me crew left me to die on a nearby island."
"You can't stay here forever. My heart holds no place for you anymore. Even if it did... I won't be caught keeping a pirate in my home."
"O' course... I'll leave before the crack o' dawn."
"Why were you left? Steal treasure, or something stupid of that sort?"
"No... it's because of... I overheard their plans of taking care of Black Spot."
"What is Black Spot?" this was my question, and this is when I decided to give the man his meal.
"Best of you not knowing. Doesn't matter to you people anyways, it's only a problem to us Sky Pirates."
Everything was silent for a few moments, but the man was getting restless just eating his meal, so he tried to strike a conversation with me.
"Boy, what's your name? I'm Jason, "Mad-Eyed" Jason."
"Jones," I replied, "David Jones."
"Hm... could he...? Nah, look nothing like him."
The mand said this under his breath, and I tried to get him to repeat it, but he just said "Nothing" and moved forward with the conversation.
"How old are you? You like you'll be of age soon."
"Next week, I'll be 16 next week."
"What job you planning to take up?"
"Blacksmith. Or some form of craftsmanship."
"Blacksmith, great job, good money. What I would've been if I didn't go run off to become a Sky Pirate."
Then the man gave me a serious look.
"Don't go mixing in with Sky Pirates, you'll end up dead."
I thought that it was funny that he would be telling me this, considering I was trying to get mom's permission to throw him off the side of our continent, down to the Old World.
"Well thanks for the meal lad. I'll go make myself a bed by the fireplace."
So he did, and I stayed at the table to make sure of it. Pretty soon, he was snoring the night away. Mom then came and joined me at the table.
"You should go and get some sleep Dave."
"Just wanted to make sure he wouldn't-"
"He won't, just go and get some rest."
"Ok, but I'm getting his weapons..."
"I already did, I put them in the secret spot, only you and I know where that is. You can rest tonight in peace."
So I went to my room, still feeling uneasy.
I tiptoed across my room, doing my best not to wake up the other children that were sleeping on the floor. I crawled up to my bunk, the bed in the room. So once I got up there, I looked at the night through the window that I installed when I was 10. After a few seconds I felt someone trying to get up. It was Silvia, my sister. She and I were our mom's first orphans. We arrived together one night, our mom told us, we were delivered by a strange man in a black cloak, and he gave our mom more than enough money to raise us. But the Navy took some of it, due to the law that 25% of what you owe goes to the Navy. But she raised us and even took in more orphans. Silvia and I had never been apart. So she cuddled up at the end of my bed.
"So... was that man scary?" she said in a scared tone, though I knew she was just pretending.
"Hey! Remember who you're talking to! I'm David Jones, future Naval Officer!"
She giggled. And her giggle made me giggle. Silvia is the person who you fall in love with the moment you see her. She also seems to have this power to make you share her mood. If she's laughing, you laugh. If she's crying, you're crying your heart out. So after giggling she suddenly saddened.
"What's the matter Silvia?"
"You're going to get a job tomorrow aren't you?"
"Yeah, but what's wrong with that?"
"You'll be working all day, and we'll only be able to fun in the evenings."
"Yes, but just remember, I'll be thinking about you the whole time! You'll be my inspiration for my work."
"I just want to be together forever."
"We'll always be together, no matter how far apart we are."
We embraced each other, for what felt like the last time. Especially when I saw the flash from the window. We both peered out of he window. We saw the lone lights of a ship... an Air Ship, the vehicle used by the Navy and worse, Sky Pirates. We saw another flash, and the next thing we knew, was that half our cottage was blown away...
