Lost in the Crowd - 05/08/08

Another rather slow week, still there are a few interesting things that caught my attention this time around...

First up though, Manga Recon! This week at MR I review my first Tezuka manga, Dororo vol. 1. Yeah, I know. Shame, shame. Anyway, it's the tale of a boy whose father offered hs body parts up to demons in exchange for power and wealth. Now the boy's.. an older boy, and is looking for his missing body parts.

While you're there be sure to check out the new look for the Weekly Recon!

Elsewhere... Manga Xanadu gives the roung up for this weeks batch of review at Manga Village. Interesting line up including Suzuka vol. 7 and Reiko The Zombie Shop vol. 1.

The new issue of Otaku USA hit the shelves last week, I still don't own a copy but hey.. I'll get it eventually.

Over at ANN there's some interesting discussions about manga fans and their ages. It all began with a news item about a library barring a 43 year old man from attending their manga club meetings. The response thread bounces the subject of older manga fans, and whether or not they're perverts, back and forth for a while before the topic spaws its own thread in the manga section, "Why Do So Many People Think Older Manga Fans Are Perverts?" Some interesting stuff there, that's for sure.

At Comipress, Chloe Ferguson takes a look at mainstream manga journalism (ie. newspapers doing articles about manga) in an article called Comical Journalism.

The Ani-Monday schedule for the next few weeks looks like it'll consist of Macross Plus, followed by an hour of Tokko. Looks like Sci-Fi may have exhausted Manga Entertainments supply of anime. I know Manga is still hoping to get Straightjacket on the air at some point this summer, but know idea of exactly when that might be.

And finally, on a puroresu note... TNA recently made an annoucement regarding the 2008 World X-Cup Tournament, stating that wrestlers from NJPW (New Japan Pro Wrestling), CMLL (One of the largest Mexican wrestling promotions), and Dragon Gate will all be involved in the tournament. What this basically means is that at some point during the year we'll get to see more Japanese wrestlers on American television, not to mention Mexican ones as well! Very cool!

I can kind of sort of understand where the library's coming from. The idea of giving teens a group of peers and all that. It's really the posters responses that blew me away more than anything. Oo.. and I have been buying Otaku USA! I just don't have the latest issue, with is the 6th I believe. Love the magazine too!

That's just plain sad, and what's worse about it, IMHO, is that the library is perpetuating the idea that adults shouldn't be interested as much as those teenagers. Publishers have a lot of work ahead of them if they really want to break manga from it's teen image. For shame on you! It's up to issue 5, and you still haven't gotten an issue of Otaku USA?! You're really missing so good stuff. Otaku USA is the only magazine I read cover to cover.

You must be! Anyone over the age of 18 is apparently! That means that just about everyone working within the industry, running the cons, hosting the panels, translating the manga, are all dirty pervs with no lives! :O Oh noes! Yeah.. that response thread was disheartening and full of fail.

Hmmm.....I'm 33 and I'm not only a manga fan but anime as well. o_O' OMG! I must be a pedophile then!! You gotto love the reaction of the youngsters. Most of us 'old' people were fans before they were born. I should go to those meeting if only to tell them that there is more than Naruto, Furuba and Death Note. (I own none of these series)
