Not sure if this will help and definately not promoting one os over another, but I dual boot, and if you do pclinuxos or sabayonlinux is loaded with good programs, plus more can be gotten through their program managers, such as the gimp, the free opensource version of photoshop, and blender, a high quality 3d program with a very steep learning curve, but with tutorials that can be googled.
