I'd say my entertainment is about 50/50 american and foreign in origin. I hardly watch anime, and in all but a few cases, I don't like it that much. (GASSSP!!) But a lot of my budget gets sunk into manga, and novels by non-american writers, however, almost as many of my books are from american authors. Same with music. While I think it's important to be aware of artists from your reigion, focusing on one reigion excessivley is narrow-minded. Truly interesting stuff, wether it be music, animation or books, borrows from a lot of genres and cultures. So, while I find the pop culture interesting, the food delicious, and some mangas to be very exciting and moving, I won't say the way Japan does things is better or worse than the west... that in and of itself is a stereotype wether you mean it or not.
actually, the only reason why ppl say that is because japanese art and story show nobility, obediance and disipline... westerns usually have many..... {"unusual traits.... (cont later)
I love Japanese anime but that doesn't mean that i hate the western anime's. Some i like and some i do not like and this goes for both the Japanese and the western anime. I have written reviews of the Japanese anime's that i own and of the 260+ done so far i estimate that about half got a 3 star rating or higher. As for voice acting....i used to watch everything in English (which isn't my native language) but have switched to Japanese (also not my native language). Why did i do this....because eventhough some of the English dubs aren't bad (some are quite good actually) i feel that the Japanese voice acting is better. Everything that i put in my reviews however is my personal opinion and should be treated as such. I don't mind people having a different opinion, in fact i prefer it when they do and they post a message about it. That way others can see the opinion of somebody else as well.
I think some people get so wrapped up in trying to be a true "otaku" that they take it too far. Yes, I watch alot of my anime online because I like the fansubs. But I don't write off a dubbed version just because its dubbed. I think its just a matter of personal preference. Watching anime (or anything for that matter) subbed, rather than dubbed, should never be a status symbol. And thinking that anything that comes from anywhere but Japan is crap is, quite frankly, very narrowminded.
Unfortuantely, I'm unimpressed with the majority of shows on the western continent. By that I don't mean ALL of them but most of them aren't very good at all and I really wish they did show anime instead. I dislike mostly the new ones, such as 24, but I also hate all variety shows, and the vast majority of those so called "reality" shows....(most of those Have to be fake, espicially the ones off A&E XP) But that doesn't mean all anime is good either, I seen a lot of them which are totally boring.. and a lot of them which are very Painful to watch. But most of the ones I like are pretty good, but I do like western shows like Seinfeld and Fraiser... they don't make them like they use to, thats for sure x_x; AH! great! I sound old now!
I like anything that is good be it anime or not! I'm glad to know that some anime fans admit that Japan has gems as well as real stinkers! I admit that there is a lot of bad anime out there! Some so bad they make even the worst of American B-movies look oscar worthy! I would watch European Cartoons if there were any airing in the US that I might like or even cartoons as exotic as ones from South Americ a and other non-western countries!
