Top 5 Things To Do

Top 5 Ways to Make Sure Your Manga Qualifies

Since the first Rising Stars of Manga™ competition kicked off in 2002, we've seen some truly talented manga cross our desks -- we're talking steal-your-breath, weaken-your-knees, move-you-to-tears kind of stuff! And what's always a shame are those striking entries that virtually scream out "publish me!" but end up getting disqualified from the competition. It breaks our hearts every time, and we've scratched our heads wondering how we could help. Here's a start ...

We've compiled the following Top 5 list to help aspiring manga-ka make sure their submissions count:

1. Include Completed & Signed Entry Forms.
One of the most frequent reasons for disqualification is a missing or incomplete Entry Form. Each manga submission requires an Entry Form, completed and signed by the entrant, and--in the case of group submissions--every member of the group. If the entrant is a minor, a parent or guardian must complete and sign the Entry Form. And do not send the Entry Form without the manga--many disqualified entrants submitted only the Form (doh!). To judge your manga, we need to see your manga. ;-) The latest entry form is for RSOM 8.

2. Include the Required Title Page.
Another frequent offender! The cover page for your manga submission must include (a) The title of your manga, (b) the name(s) of the creator(s)-author, illustrator, editor, etc.--and (c) the total number of pages in the submission. All three of these elements must appear on the cover page or your manga will not be accepted. Also note: this competition includes a new Rule: the front of each submitted page of manga must include the names and phone numbers of its creator(s) and the manga's title. This means no double-sided manga!

3. Follow the Page Count Requirements.
Even if you're convinced that your manga couldn't possibly be the same without that one last page that takes it over the 20-page max, don't submit 21 pages. On the flipside, don't send us 14 pages thinking your manga has everything it needs and nothing more. It will only disqualify you. Instead, take that little bit of extra effort and rework your story to fill between 15 and 20 pages. You'll be happy, we'll be happy, and who knows? You may even see those same pages in print when the next anthology debuts.

4. Print Legibly.
If we don't know who you are, we can't contact you. If we can't read your stuff, how do we know what your manga's about? Complete your Entry Form as neatly as possible and in English. And use the same judgment to letter your manga... it will allow judges to soak in the entire manga experience, rather than spend their time trying to make out the words "redanig magna ca be fuun."

5. Submit Your Stuff On Time.
All that good stuff in 1-4 above doesn't mean a thing if you don't get your submission to us in time! Remember... we must receive your full, completed manga submission postmarked on or before January 11, 2008. To make sure you qualify, plan ahead! There are no extensions, no matter what the excuse is, so if the dog's gonna eat your manga entry, make sure he does it early enough so you can still make the January 11th deadline.
