RSOM 8
"Want to be a manga artist? No one makes it easier than TOKYOPOP."
--WIZARD

The competition for Rising Stars of Manga 8 has started! What is Rising Stars? Only the coolest and best way to get your foot in the door and take part in the Manga Revolution!

If you have no or little prior publication experience, entering the Rising Stars of Manga (RSoM) competition is the best way to introduce yourself to TOKYOPOP. Your entry will consist of a complete manga short story that is ready for publication. That means you and your team must be able to handle every aspect of manga creation: script, layout, pencils, inks, tones, and lettering.

Many people already know that finalists have the chance to pitch a full-length graphic novel series to the TOKYOPOP editors—we've signed up dozens of previous winners already. What you may not know is that even some of the manga-ka who did not win are currently working on TOKYOPOP projects that will see publication soon. Don't be discouraged if you don't win—enter again and again. Right now, RSoM is a great source for TOKYOPOP to find and hire promising new talent.

Here's a final list of everything you'll need, just so you don't miss any important information.

I live for this stuff

You just have to practice...A LOT! Study the things and the people around you; if you can, take art classes (especially in anatomy, because so many artists have trouble with that...I even thought about taking a drafting class to help me learn perspective better--since people who have studied architecture draw the most amazing backgrounds, which are super-important in comics!) There are also lots of helpful websites with tutorials on things like layouts, lettering, and tones (best to go digital when it comes to tones...way cheaper and easier to use) and you can check out drawing books from your library, too. Also, look at the work of your favorite manga authors closely to study their techniques. Never copy them, of course, but study how they used tones, sound effects, backgrounds, and their characters body language and facial expressions to tell the story to get an idea of the best way to go about it. It takes a lot of practice and trial and error, and you can't be afraid of criticism (because it will help you!), but do your best and have fun and you'll do great!

It sounds like lotsa people took a few weeks on theirs. u,u; I worked on mine since July. I dunno how people can put things together so fast.

03.01.2008 06:41 AM

I'm kind of a long story writer too but there are times that the things that you do has do be gotten rid of. It was REALLY HARD working on mine. I took me two weeks before the deadline.
