Kindaichi Case Files, The Volume 1
Hajime Kindaichi is your classic underachiever - always falling asleep in class, never doing his homework - it's no wonder everyone thinks he's a loser. It seems like his only friend is Miyuki, the girl-next-door. Ignoring her classmates' complaints, she invites Kindaichi to the Drama Club's weekend rehearsal for 'Phantom of the Opera' - after all, someone's got to do the stagehand grunt work. The production gets off to a shaky start, but when cast members start dying in ways mimicking events in the play, things get downright grisly. While everyone worries about being snuffed out, this is young Kindaichi's moment to shine. With his amazing deductive reasoning and the ability to keep his cool in the face of death, he's a regular Sherlock Holmes. Now the class slacker must put on a class act investigation before the 'Phantom' strikes again!

Hajime Kindaichi is a teenaged crime solver who's part Sherlock Holmes, part Encyclopedia Brown, part Scooby Doo.
Originally published in Japan's Weekly Shounen Magazine as Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo, this popular long-running manga has spawned an anime TV series, as well as several animated feature-length films.
In their original tankoubon (graphic novel) form, as published by Kodansha in Japan, the individual Kindaichi 'cases' often spanned several volumes; TOKYOPOP® will present each volume of Kindaichi as a self-contained 'case' which will begin and end in the same book. 'Cases' are not necessarily related to previous narratives - so, our books can be read in any order.
Kindaichi (frequently with best-bud, Miyuki) travels to various places where a murder has taken place, typically involving ghosts, curses, myths and folklore of significant
events from the distant past, and solves the mystery using ingenious deductions of curious clues and his cool magic.

Hajime Kindaichi
Although this 17-year-old high school junior has an IQ of 180, Hajime's slacker attitude has earned him a reputation as poor student and something of a troublemaker. But he's actually a brilliant amateur detective, who uses his uncanny powers of observation and deduction to solve even the most unusual of cases. Hajime is the grandson of Kousuke Kindaichi, a celebrated detective in his own right.
Miyuki Nanase
Also a 17-year-old high school junior. She has been friends with Hajime since childhood. Unlike Hajime, she is a popular, straight-A student. And, unbeknownst to her, she is also Hajime's love interest.
Isamu Kenmochi
A police inspector who is an occasional partner of Hajime.
Kengo Akechi
An extremely smart police superintendent who enjoys a competitive friendship with Kindaichi.
