Produced by the stunning Peach Pit. This is a nine volume series, six of which are available to buy here at TokyoPop.
Plot:
Jun Sakurada is in Junior High but refuses to go to school. To keep himself occupied he orders various bits and pieces offline and then returns them before the grace period ends. He comes across a letter from a website in his desk drawer that offers him the chance to place an order for a beautiful hand crafted doll, filling in the form he is greeted the next morning by Shinku, a doll that cannot be returned.
Shinku arrives in a box which is centered in Jun's room, when he goes to pick up the mysterious doll he realised that she has a wind up key on her back. Curious, he winds her up and doll comes to life. Dressed in an old fashioned "Gothic Lolita" style dress, Shinku greets Jun with a slap around the face. She proceeds to tell Jun that he will be her "manservant". She introduces herself as "Shinku, the fifth doll of the Rozen Maiden.
In a time of trouble Jun is attacked by a toy and Shiku offers to save his life if he agrees to pledge his service to her. Jun now must protect Shinku's Rosa Mystica when she is faced with battles against other Rozen maiden dolls for the title of "Alice".
Art: The detail that has been put into Shinku's gorgeous dress is eye catching, and Peach Pit's story line has a deep and dark feel to it which comes through later on in the volume. Very different to their other stories, I feel that Rozen Maiden is probably one of the best overall stories by Peach Pit. However it seems to lack in background and I'd like to see other characters being introduced in the same manner as Shinku.
Rating: 8.5/10
Overall a great read, I'd recommend it to both genders because of the flawless design and the great battle scenes. I'd recommend the anime as well which is just as beautiful!

There's more to this story than just pretty dressed up dolls, do you swear by the Rose Ring to protect their Rosa Mystica?
