Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO) is a must read for manga fans. It has been quite a while since I read the series, but it is still fresh in my mind. A short summary of the plot: Onizuka is an ex-gang member/semi-pervert who one day decides to become a highschool teacher. He has no qualifications, could probably get arrested for several morally subjective actions, and has tendencies to sleep in the school. Onizuka is no math teacher, nor is he a grammer teacher. Onizuka teaches life. His task is to teach a class that has literally driven former teachers to deaths and nervous breakdowns. In his mission to "teach" these kids, Onizuka himself undergoes a self-discovery.
GTO is really a great manga. I cannot say enough how wonderful this manga is. The writing is simply outstanding. Fujisawa's humor is perfectly blended with the darker plot lines and the art work is wonderfully appropriate. GTO follows the archetype of a man "lost in life but finds himself through a journey." Onizuka is a social drifter with a hazardous past, and it is through his job as a teacher that enlightens himself. Amidst the humor, it is this journey that Onizuka takes that cements GTO as a great manga.
GTO has been out for a long time now, so if you haven't read it yet, go read the series now!
