Twelve Kingdoms
Two days ago, I picked up a copy of the first novel of the "Twelve Kingdoms" series, by Fuyumi Ono. I was originally introduced to the anime by a friend years ago when it still aired in Japan and instantly fell in love with it. Unlike most anime who lack both characters and plot with depth, even the most minor characters grew to be important in the series, and the only thing as complex as Ono's carefully-plotted story were her well-developed characters. I later discovered that the series was not based upon a manga (as many anime are), but upon a series of books by the horror novelist Fuyumi Ono.
Though I have not finished reading book one quite yet, the translation does not disappoint; our translator managed to capture the essence of Ono's work, not only by providing us with an accurate, and easy-to-understand translation of the series, but also by his use of certain translations that asserted his own familiarity with the mythos "The Twelve Kingdoms" is based upon.
I eagerly look forward to TokyoPop's next installment of this series, and encourage you to read the book, or enjoy the anime as well.
