Undertown: The Script -- BK 1 page 14

PAGE FOURTEEN

Panel One: Sama changes out of his PJ and into his street clothes: jeans, t-shirt with the monster design on the front, tennis shoes. His teddy bear is slumped over on the bed.

1/SAMA: It's all my fault. I should have listened and not played with his medals.

Panel Two: Sama, now dressed, is stuffing things into his backpack. I don't know exactly what kinds of things he's putting in there -- when I get to a point in the story where Sama needs something I'll suddenly remember: he packed that in his backpack! So it'll be stuff like a flashlight, a notebook, etc. While he's packing, he's turned to look at/talk to his bear.

Sama's trying to be strong, but he's on the verge of breaking down.

2/SAMA: My dad is sick, Teddy. I have to act like a big kid now.

Panel Three: He's over the verge: Sama has crumbled to the ground and has his head in his hands, crying.

Panel Four: Close up of the teddy bear, its black plastic eyes are cold and unresponsive to Sama's crying and pleading.

3/SAMA (off): I can't help it if I cry! I'll try harder not to. You'll help me, won't you?

Panel Five: Sama tenderly puts his teddy bear into his backpack.

4/SAMA: We won't be gone long. Just get the Sugar Stone and come right back. Promise.

This page has the important Pasconian line "It's all my fault." A lot of the stories that I write have this line, because I'm obsessed with characters who struggle with the culpability surrounding their lot in life. In other words, characters who blame themselves for things that are bigger than them. What's really interesting to me is that by saying, "It's all my fault," Sama seems to be taking all the blame, but in reality it's a defensive dodge. By saying this, Sama avoids taking responsibility for what truly is and is not his responsibility. This page is where Sama's real journey begins.
