At Sunset

“I can’t believe she’s tried” David exclaimed. When they were both outside on the hotel balcony and the glass door was closed, Leaving Saya snooze in the quiet.

“I don’t understand it, either” Hagi commented lightly, leaning back against the railing in a lazy manner. He thought to himself that this was the kind of behavior that he would have been scolded for when he was growing at the Zoo. Joel would have never tolerated him acting so improper while speaking. David however, followed suit and took it as his cue to relax, slouching down to sit against the glass door.

“What are your plans?” David asked. A strange look crossed the chevalier’s face.

“I have no new ones at the moment and I don’t mean to be rude, but I don’t feel like talking about the old ones. I would like to ask you a favor David” Hagi said in a tone that David thought made it sound more like an order. Though at the same time, he was sure that Hagi’s intention was only to bring out the importance of what it was that he wanted.

“What’s that ?” David asked.

“Did you tell anyone where you were going ?” Hagi asked.

“No,” David replied, “I left as soon as the beeper went off.”

“Good. David if you can think of a decent excuse for your absence, could you not let the rest of the Red Shield know that Saya has awakened ?” Hagi asked “I would a like a few days to help her adapt. She hasn’t been a part of the world for decades.” David nodded.

“Of course. That explains why you wanted the hotel room, instead of just taking her back to base. I’m sure I can think of something” He answered

“Thank You” Hagi replied, smiling. David was truly awed by his behavior. He was a bit child like, but at the same time his face had a tenseness about it, particularly his eyes. David knew that look. It was the look soldiers had before they went to battle, a mix of excitement and terror.

After David was gone back to base, Hagi laid quietly on the bed opposite of Saya's. His eyes were closed and his mind was empty. The only noises to be heard were Saya's deep breathing and the rotation of the ceiling fan. It was a peaceful quite. "too much quite" he found himself thinking. He knew he would wish for this later on, though. He would wish for a simple quite moment ,a moment void of murder pots and battle strategy.

"The next time things are this peaceful, you’ll be dead"he reminded himself. His eyes flashed open, all the peace flowing instantly form his mind. He sat up and looked to the window. Sunset had begun, orange glow illuminating the room.

"Did I really lie here that long ? It couldn’t have been any later than noon when David left" he thought in shock.

A soft yawn sounded. Hagi turned away for the sunset to see Saya watching him. She slowly sat up and shivered. Her body temperature was dropping from lack of nutrition. Acting on instinct she rose form her bed and clumsily stumbled over to his. She crawled towards him and he pulled her into his arms, where to his shock she shed his trench coat and pressed her body tightly to him, gasping at the warmth.

“Saya!” he exclaimed, though he knew she wouldn’t understand. However, he didn’t push her away. He told himself that he didn’t want to because she must be freezing. But he had other reasons. He liked the feeling of her being so close. He liked the little happy sounds she made at the feeling of warmth. It brought back nice memories.

He pushed his hands gently between his chest and her’s to undo undo the buttons of his shirt. She crawled in even closer, pressing her face to his chest. He found himself slowly tracing the curves of her body. For a few minutes or maybe a half hour, Maybe longer - he lost track of time - he let her lie there, enjoying the feeling of her skin against his own.

Then he took his knife from the bedside table. Saya's eyes were drawn to it - simmering in the last drops of sunlight - as if she knew what was coming. He brought it slowly to his neck and gently grazed himself so that a few small drops of blood seeped from his skin.

Her reaction was instant. She lunged forward, shoving him violently against the backboard. Her small prickly fangs latching onto his neck. He gasp and closed his eyes, focusing on sheer painful pleasure of the moment. He gave her a few minutes to feed, until his veins were searing . Then he shoved his hand into her mouth and pulled her fangs from his neck. He felt his own blood oozing over his hand. The room was spinning before his eyes.
