battle royale chapter 4

Kai moved slowly through the thick underbrush of the wooded area.  According to the announcement last night at midnight, 38 students remained.  He had killed Ryo, and Kiyoshi had killed himself.  However there were two others dead.  Girl Nana and then boy Yuji, It didn’t really matter if someone else was killing the others too.  It made things easier for him.  He held the Glock 18 in his hand now as he moved gracefully in-between the trees.  It was only around 7 in the morning and the sun had just risen.  He was glad the sun was up it made it easier to find everyone.  Right now he was looking for the origin of the gunshot he had heard last night.  He hadn’t heard anymore so and it most likely resulted in the death of one of the other two students.  It was possible that one of them killed themselves, or someone had killed them.  Kai paused as a stick snapped to his left.  There was someone there behind one of the bushes.  The leaves of the canopy rustled with the blowing wind, and along with it came the smell of perfume mixed with sweat.  Kai took aim at the bush, but before he could pull the trigger he heard a pop and the tree next to his head explode it sending shards of timber in his direction.  He rolled forward into the bush.  The pop came again and the 9mm round bounced off the dirt.   Sitting next to him in the bush was female student Haruko Fuse.  Her eyes opened wide when she saw him and the gun in his hand.  Kai rose and aimed the Glock to his left where the shots had come from.  The forest floor took a steep climb upward and ducked behind a tree at the top of the hill with his skull slightly exposed was Kenji Murakami.  In his hand was the black slim lined 9mm VP70.  It popped again as the hot shell came hurdling towards it.  Haruko covered her ears to hide from the noise as the bullet tore through the leaves of the bush.  Kai took aim and fired blowing away a piece of Kenji’s hiding place.  The head disappeared and Kai quickly unloaded his 18 rounds, dropped the clip and replaced it.  Kenji’s head popped out then ducked back away when he heard the pop from Kai’s Glock 18.  Kai’s bag dropped down onto Harukos lap, and the empty clip on the ground was kicked at her.  “Haruko please load that for me.”  Kai shot again when Kenji poked his head out forcing him back into hiding.  “There’s a box of ammo in my bag, if you don’t know how to load it theirs a manual in there too ok.”  He shot again.

Haruko smiled then her face went from pale to bright red as she opened the bag and pulled out the box of 9mm bullets.  She fumbled putting in each one.  She was so embarrassed, here she was being protected by the boy she had a crush on, and even though they were being shot at all she could think of was what to say to him.  She shook her head to get the thought out.  She had to do this first if she didn’t they would both die, and she wasn’t going to let him die because of her.  She looked up at him as she loaded a bullet into the clip.  She watched as he stared coldly towards the top of the hill.  His head cocked slightly to the right as he peered through the sight mounted on the gun with his left eye.  She wondered why he did that as she loaded another round, he was right handed so it didn’t make sense.  She thought that it was cute though.  She kept loading round after round in until finally she couldn’t put anymore in.  Right on time too as Kai dropped the clip and it landed at his feet.  She smiled as she handed it to him, but he didn’t take it.  She looked back at the top of the hill.  Kenji was running towards them, completely exposed.  His head jerked back as Kai’s gun jerked back almost simultaneously.  The bullet acted like a wedge forcing his skull open on the right side above his eye, and Kenji fell back then tumbled forward down the hill.  Smashing into a rock on the hillside, his carcass lay there unmoving.

Kai sighed with relief as he bent down towards her to pick up the loaded clip from the ground.  Haruko had dropped it when she saw Kenji.  She looked away, and before she even knew what she was doing she was loading the other clip.  “Your so amazing Kai,” She said as she put a bullet into the empty magazine.  Kai didn’t respond all she could hear was the smack of the clip and then the cold rooster of the gun.  She kept talking, ignoring it.  “I’ve always thought you were awesome.  Always so nice to everyone, it’s what I loved about you.  It’s why I lov…”  Before she could finish the trigger was pulled again and she felt the hot sting of metal piercing through her body and burying itself in her chest.  She fell to the ground dead.  Kai didn’t even look at her as he searched her bag.  Her weapon had been a steal chain.  He didn’t even bother taking it, and moved up the hill to get Kenji’s VP70.  Once he had it he took the box of ammo and food and water and left.

Hana Makajima moved slowly cautiously.  It had been only moments ago that she had heard the gunfight.  She didn’t know who was fighting, but she knew it was close.  Somebody close was killing everybody else in the class off.  She began making a list of people it could be, but in the end she realized that didn’t matter in this game.  Everybody would kill to save their own asses.  Hana emerged from the forest onto a small dirt road that ran to what she guessed would be civilization.  She took her map from her bag.  She wasn’t able to find it on the topographical map she had been given.  Right next to the woods though almost the dead center was a group of houses, or at least she thought they were houses.  It was a bundle of small triangles and the map key said that triangles meant buildings.  She looked at the bottom of her map.  She had two areas marked out on the map.  They had become danger zones at midnight.  Luckily though she wasn’t near them, she stared down the road.  Wouldn’t the others be looking for shelter too? Hana thought to herself, it made sense no one wanted to sit outside and sleep, and you’d be safer in a house.  She frowned, but if she did find someone they could possible work together.  The hair stood on the back of her neck, and her arms were covered with goose bumps.  She hadn’t heard anyone, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that there was someone behind her.  Slowly she turned her head.  Behind her 15 yards away Kai stood in the middle of the road.  She didn’t get up from her crouched position.  She smiled confidently.  She knew she was faster than him.  Compared to Kai she was a bullet train.  She took off from her crouched position at top speed leaving her bag behind her.  Hana didn’t look back as she ran.  She could hear the footsteps after her, but they sounded closer.  She looked back and there Kai was only 7 yards away.  He was gaining on her, and she could see the bow and arrows sticking out of his bag on his back.  Damnit she thought, how the hell he got so darn fast.  She jerked to the right off the road, and into the woods.  She wasn’t going to let him catch her.  A dead tree had fallen in her path, and she easily cleared it.  There was a pop behind her, and her shoulder burned.  She stumbled forward, but managed to catch herself and kept running.  Another bullet whizzed by her, and the ground in front of her vanished and she fell.

Hana lay face down in a small pool of icy water.  She shivered it was so cold.  The water only came up to her waist, but it was filthy.  She couldn’t even see her legs.  It looked like she was in an irrigation ditch.  She knew a little about them because of a report she had to do for farming.  They were used to bring and take water from a crop.  She remembered the report, because she had to miss an important track meet.  Farther down Hana saw something floating on top of the water; it had a swarm of flies around it.  It was a bird.  She covered her mouth; next to it on the bank was a dead rat.  She felt like she was gonna be sick.  “You can’t escape.”  She jumped Kai was sitting on one of the banks staring down at her.  The gun VP70 still in his hand, Kai looked over at the dead animals floating farther down.  “The water in this irrigation canal is infected.  The bacterium has already seeped into the wound in your shoulder.  It will kill you horribly.  High fever, it will be easier if you let me kill you here.”  She grimaced “like hell I’m going to let you kill me you sick f***!”  He said “please.  You are going to die one way, or the other.  Whether I let you die on your own and suffer, or I kill you myself.”  She grinned back showing her teeth “why the hells are you doing this anyway, you really care about living that bad?”  Kai’s arm jerked up and with a loud pop and a splash Hana fell back dead.  He didn’t move, he just stared down into the murky water.  “No.  I will die here as well.”

Hiroshi ran as fast as he could.  He had just witnessed his friend Kai trying to kill the schools track star Hana.  He ran as fast as he could which wasn’t very fast, but he was making way to much noise as he crashed through the forest.  His weapon was a fountain pen.  Like writers used to use in the old days.  The pen is mightier than the sword; to bad Kai has a gun too.  Can’t win against that he thought.  Something grabbed him and threw him against a tree he tried to scream, but he felt the cold steel on his neck.  Susumu stared at him coldly, his survival knife in his hand.  Hiroshi sighed “I’m glad you’re not Kai.”  Susumu’s expression went from cold to pure confusion.  “Kai?”  Hiroshi nodded “he killed Hana.”  Susumu let go of him and hid his knife in his coat.  “Did he have a gun?”  Hiroshi quickly nodded, “I could’ve taken him with my pen if it wasn’t for that.  You know since he has a sword?”  Susumu glared at him.  He really hated his jokes.  “Whatever.  I found Kenji and Haruko down on a hill not far from here.  Both of them had been shot.”  “Do you think Kai did it?  Why?” asked Hiroshi.  He figured that Kai would be the last one who would start killing the other classmates, but he had seen it with his own eyes.  “We’ll go tell Takeru first.  Then we’ll figure out what to do with Kai.”  His face lit up “oh man you know where the boss is?”  Susumu smiled nodded and led the way through the enemy infested jungle with only a survival knife and a clown who thought a pen could save you against a sword.

Takeru stared out the window.  He was on the second floor of a two story house hidden at the edge of the woods.  It had a well outside and a path that lead from the woods into another residential area.  Beyond that there was a dock.  He had already thought about taking a ship their and using it to escape the island, but thanks to the collars it was impossible.  The collars made everything impossible.  If you tried to take it off it exploded, if you made a move they didn’t like they would detonate it themselves.  Behind him was a table with four chairs.  Asuka was sitting in one simply staring at him, under her sailor suit she was wearing a level IIIA bullet proof vest that had been supplied as her weapon.  She wanted him to take it, but he wouldn’t accept it.  To the right of the table was a metal spring bed.  Lying on the bed was an Uzi 9mm, several shuriken or ninja throwing stars, grenades, chopsticks, and a shirisaya which was a featureless katana.  Those were all the weapons they had been given.  Susumu had also brought a knife with him, but he had that on him right now.  He was out trying to find supplies as well as other students who would join them.  Takeru kept staring out the window.  He had heard the gunshots earlier and the one last night.  It was obvious that someone was engaging the other students, but he couldn’t think of who it could be.  He heard the door open downstairs and the sound of footsteps.  The second floor was basically a loft, and you had a clear view of the stairs from there.  This whined up the back wall up to the second floor, the house only contained the one bed and the kitchen was small.  It also didn’t have anything useful.  No food and nothing they could use as weapons.  The house he guessed had been cleaned out when the occupants had been moved.  “Are you hungry?”  Asuka asked, Takeru didn’t reply.  Susumu and Hiroshi made their way up the stairs onto the second floor.  Asuka looked back at them “hey Susumu I see you found Hiroshi.”  He nodded “found Kai too.”  “Where is he?”  She looked around, and tried to look down onto the first floor.  “We think he’s the one killing off other students.  I think he killed Kenji and Haruko.  We know he killed Hana.”  Her face turned horrified “Kai did that?”  “Did he follow you?”  That was all Takeru said without even disengaging his lock on the window, Susumu looked at Hiroshi and shrugged.  “We don’t think so.”  Takeru kept staring out the window.  “Kai.”  That was the last thing he said before Kamuro Hara came up with a large bowl of rice mixed with some dried meat, and dried vegetables.  “Look what I found in a shed out back.”  Hiroshi looked at it and smiled “a bowl of food wow I really don’t think we should eat it.”  Kamuro glared at him, “no dried food.  And rice, I made the food.  I and Jun already tried it, and were fine.”  Kamuro always answered questions before they were even asked.  It wasn’t so bad once you got used to it, but if you just met him you’d immediately want to dip his feet in cement and just drop him in the nearest body of water.  “Are you guy’s sure Kai is doing it?”  Asuka asked again.  Susumu nodded.  She sighed “I didn’t think he would.”  Kamuro looked at them “what did he do?”  Susumu whispered in his ear, and he froze.  “Bull shit?  Kai?”  Again he just nodded.  Kamuro grimaced; Takeru continued to stare out the window.

Ryota sat against a tree; he was very well hidden behind some shrubs.  His school coat wrapped around him, lying across his lap was a Remington 870 model shotgun with a pistol grip.  “f***ing Takeru,” he grumbled as he sat their frowning.  “Jun’s only with me because that jerk said no.”  Ryota kept saying that to himself over and over again.  “I should find him and kick his ass.  Maybe kill Asuka too.  Yea, then he’ll know how bad I feel.  Once he feels my pain, I can forgive him for what he did.”  Ryota picked up his bag and rested the shotgun on his shoulder.  Now it was time for him to find Takeru
