Meaning of the Pentacle pt 3 (public)

Now for mostly the use of the Pentacle in the Wiccan setting. (information taken from here- link )

n

The pentacle is one of the most famous images within religious symbology and has great spiritual meaning to the Wiccan culture. Unfortunately due to its similarity to the inverted pentacle, the characteristic symbol of many satanic cults, the symbol has been perceived as an object of fear and mistrust by many people. In fact this reputation is completely undeserved, as both the pentacle and Wicca have no Satanic roots.

n

The art of Wicca or Witchcraft is a reconstructed form of Paganism fairly similar to the religious structure of the ancient Celts, based upon a spiritual connection with the Earth, it spirits, and its elements. The upright pentacle was originally the symbol of a Goddess known as Kore, who was worshiped over an area extending from Egypt to what is now present day England.  However, Wiccans believed the pentacle to be the symbol of the Goddess of the Underground known as Morgan, which they later adopted as their own symbol

n

To those outside the faith the pentacle is nothing more than an oddly shaped star, but to the Wiccans it is a bold statement about the universe and our place within it. The underlying message of the symbol is quite simple, that we have the ability to bring the "spirit" to Earth and we can only become a complete organism by doing this. Then five points of the pentacle are usually interpreted as the five factors needed to sustain life; fire, earth, water, air and the spirit. The circle around the outside represents the Goddess and refracts and reflects light, supposedly bringing intelligence, wisdom and protection to the wearer. The metaphysical elements and the placements on the pentacle are as follows:

n

Fire-

n

Fire is located on the lower right hand angle of the symbol and represents the element of fire. Metaphorically it also represents courage and daring.

n

Water-

n

Water is located on the upper right hand angle of the symbol, and represents the element of water. Metaphorically it also represents emotion and intuition.

n

Air-

n

Air is located on the upper left hand angle of the symbol, and represents the element of air. Metaphorically it also represents intelligence and the arts.

n

Earth-

n

Earth is located on the lower left hand angle of the symbol, and represents the element of earth. Metaphorically it also represents stability and physical endurance.

n

Spirit-

n

The spirit is located at the top point of the upright pentacle, receiving the pole position as the most important factor in the sustainability of life. Metaphorically the spirit represents the All and the Divine. During ceremonies the spirit rules over the four elements.

n

Traditionally the pentacles were manufactured from materials of varying cost, such as copper, sliver, gold and brass. Silver pentacles represent energy of the moon and the associated psychic energies, whereas gold versions represent the energy of the Sun, power and strength. During times of religious persecution they were often made from clay and dough, which were readily disposable and saved many Wiccans from being brunt alive.

HOW IS THE PENTACLE USED IN WICCAN LIFE

n

Being a highly important symbol, the pentacle is a symbol always used for personal, spiritual and ritual uses. It is used to bless others and ourselves by making the sign of the pentacle across our bodies.  Before, during and after rituals it is used to bless sacred space, tools and all objects that are used in ritual, ceremony and spells. It is a protective talisman against negative energy and forces.

An intresting story regarding it can be found here by its writer: link

n

For time, I will repeat it.

n

When man was young he/she stood on the tallest mountain and reached up to try to grab the moon. Instead a star fell into the hand. A six-pointed star. As they held it in their hand, a deity came from the north, took a point of the star and threw it back to the heavens. "This will light the way so that you will never be lost." they said. Then, the deity kissed the person on the mouth twice. The deity told the person, "I am of water. Come to me when your thirst is dry or your belly is empty and I shall grant you feast and drink." As a few more deities came, one said "I am Earth. I dwell in the east." As another said, "I am Fire. I dwell in the south." Then, the last one said, "I am Air. I dwell in the west. We will guide you as well as help to keep you warm or cool, as well as provide feast and drink. Keep your eyes and heart open, as there are more deities to meet. Remember where you come from and know where you are. For that you are the last point of the star, Spirit."

n

The pentagram is also "used for protection. to banish energy, or to bring it to you, depending on how it's drawn," wrote a Wiccan visitor.

n

n

So as you can see there are many meanings this misunderstood symbol has carried with it. More of them have been good than bad. A symbol has meaning primarily to the wearer and therefore one should learn the meaning that the bearer is influenced by before one allows one's prejudices to condemn an individual. We have many dividing factors and stereotypes and hatreds in the American culture that could easily be dispelled by a little education and a lot of understanding.  Everything has a good and bad side to it. Even the Christian cross. Where there is good, there must always be evil. So be careful and I wish you well. Do what ye will, but do ye none harm.

Blessed Be
