Shadows are born from Light ... Born of noble blood, Deshwitat Rudbich became an outcast after being infected by the Vampire curse. Now he's reduced to drinking the blood of his former countrymen in order to survive. ... but the Light can always banish Shadow. Three hundred years ago, Deshwitat was banished to a prison of stone by the Sorcerer of Light, Kalutika. And there he would have remained for eternity, had fate not intervened. Resurrected to the present day, he now seeks revenge. Light and Darkness are not necessarily aligned with good and evil. Kalutika, once an agent of goodness, now uses Light Magic in his plot for domination. Deshwitat is the only one who can possibly stand against him, but as proven 300 years ago, his Dark Magic is unable to defeat Kalutika. In order to defeat his nemesis, Deshwitat must do the unthinkable -- a vampire and master of Dark Magic must learn to harness the power of Light Magic. Impossible? Western sorcerers have always assumed so, but a group of Buddhist monks in China claim that they have done just that. So, accompanied by his reluctant companions, Deshwitat travels east to change destiny.

Deshwitat Lived Rudbich
A powerful Dark Magician and Vampire, Deshwitat was never particularly evil, but held his status with dignity. 300 years ago his beloved fiancee Lilith was killed by the Light Sorcerer Kalutika, and Deshwitat's body was sealed in limbo while his mind was left to contemplate revenge for 300 years. He is awoken in the modern day to find Kalutika's forces rising in power. Deshwitat now seeks the means to destroy Kalutika, and after completing his quest he plans to let himself die.

Kalutika Maybus
A White Magician who defeated Deshwitat 300 years ago. Nostradamus foretold that Kalutika would bring chaos to the world.

Millenear Sheffield
A 21-year-old Exorcist. Orphaned at an early age, Millenuear was cared for by her uncle and aunt until they were killed by her spiritual rage. Priest Williams took her in and taught her how to focus her powers to help people. She disobeyed the head Bishop of the Vatican to save a possessed girl and she lost her standing as a priest.

Remi Do
The 17-year-old daughter of Sang-Ho Do, a supernatural investigator. She is angry at Deshwitat for draining her father's blood, but the vampire assures her that Sang-Ho can be resurrected after he himself is slain. Now she works with Deshwitat to eliminate Kalutika so that the vampire can die in peace.

Rett Buttler
A swordsman who was a friend of Deshwitat 300 years ago. Kalutika forced immortality on him so that Rett would have to witness the end of the world.

Beryun
A spiritual warrior created by monks, Beryun is the only person capable of simultaneously wielding Light and Dark magic. Despite her appearance, she isn't human.

Lilith Serbino
Deshwitat's beloved, she was killed by Kalutika when she tried to shield the vampire from his attack.

Kang-Woo Lee

Rebirth is Kang-Woo Lee's first published manhwa and has been serialized in the Korean weekly comic magazine Champ since 1998. As of early 2003, there are also 13 volumes of Rebirth available in graphic novel format, too - and the series is still running.

Kang-Woo Lee is a dedicated baseball fan (having named one of his characters Sheffield, after star outfielder Gary Sheffield) and a video game master, too.
