Hajime's friend, the writer YOUSUKE ITSUKI, asks Hajime to help his publishing editor acquire the rights of a book newly written by a famous writer. This famous writer throws a code-breaking contest at his vacation villa27the code is supposed to reveal the location of the floppy disk which contains the manuscript. At the contest, the writer gets murdered, and the murderer sets Hajime up so that he becomes a principal suspect. Knowing that the real murderer is only after the floppy disk, Hajime races against the murderer to crack the code!

Hajime Kindaichi
Although this 17-year-old high school junior has an IQ of 180, Hajime's slacker attitude has earned him a reputation as poor student and something of a troublemaker. But he's actually a brilliant amateur detective, who uses his uncanny powers of observation and deduction to solve even the most unusual of cases. Hajime is the grandson of Kousuke Kindaichi, a celebrated detective in his own right.

Miyuki Nanase
Also a 17-year-old high school junior. She has been friends with Hajime since childhood. Unlike Hajime, she is a popular, straight-A student. And, unbeknownst to her, she is also Hajime's love interest.

Isamu Kenmochi
A police inspector who is an occasional partner of Hajime.

Kengo Akechi
An extremely smart police superintendent who enjoys a competitive friendship with Kindaichi.
