Tohru Honda was an orphan, living with her grandfather, when one day fate kicked her out of the house and she was forced to take up residence in a tent in the forest. Little did she know that the land she was staying on belonged to the Sohma family, a clan of beautiful and mysterious people. After stumbling upon the teenage squatter, the Sohmas invite Tohru to stay in their house in exchange for cooking and cleaning. Everything's going well until she discovers the Sohma family's greatest secret: when hugged by members of the opposite sex, they each turn into their Chinese Zodiac animal!
Tohru Honda
A very humble and grateful girl, Tohru tries hard to please those around her and sincerely wants to get to know them better. When she discovers the Sohma secret, she promises to take it with her to her grave. She's always felt like an outsider--a rice ball in a fruit basket--so living in a household of outsiders makes her feel as if she's finally home.
Yuki Sohma
Zodiac Animal--the Rat. Yuki is beautiful and mysterious. The other kids at school call him the 'Prince of Kaiwaia High.' He left the main Sohma house so that he could attend a co-ed school, but being so popular yet unable to touch any girl makes his life quite difficult. He's often fighting with Kyo.
Kyo Sohma
Zodiac Animal--The Cat. According to legend, the Cat was tricked by the Rat and was left out of the Zodiac. Kyo certainly acts like someone who was betrayed, and Yuki--the Rat--is his greatest rival. He's been training hard in the martial arts so that he can beat Kyo. Impulsive, headstrong and prone to violence, he has a hard time dealing with others, but he's trying.
Shigure Sohma
Zodiac Animal--The Dog. Shigure is a novelist by trade and tries hard to look the part, lounging around the house in his kimono. He has a dry wit, but a good heart. As senior member of his splinter Sohma house, he looks out for Yuki and Kyo.
Natsuki Takaya
Natsuki Takaya made her manga debut in 1992. She was born in Tokyo and her Blood Type is A.

I haven't read the manga but I just adore this show...I love all the characters...it's just so inspiring and imaginative...Hopefully i can get the books, but i will even like it better if they continue the series on tv

Alright... I'm not lying..and i say this is the best series of books i have read and my entire 17 years of living. (i know... im only 17 but still... XD i read alot) Its dark.... and it makes you feel good. I actually cried when i was done with the series because i wanted more!! Best book.... out of all regular books and all mangas. =)

I love the manga, I really do. I watched the anime first (big mistake) and was not very pleased with the ending. The ending in the manga was much, much better XD L.O.V.E YUKI! =D

Usually, I love the prince charming type like Yuki, but from the time Kyo dropped down, I was like "Oh my gosh!He's wonderful! He has to be the one she ends up with!He has to!" haha..I've loved this manga since the beginning, and when I read the japanese version because I really wanted to read the ending and it was before the twenty third volume came out in America I cryed my eyes out because I had wanted it to go on even if it was the perfect ending.

i read this manga becuase my friend showed it to me i was hook!!!!!!!!!! I fell in love with Kyo from the moment he came crashin down from the cellin. LOL i started readin it november 2008 and by january i had all 21 mangas my mom bought it as a gift i was soooooooooooooo happy i even got her into it. thats how good it is... i like ky, hatsuharu, hatori, shigure, momiji I LOVE FURUBA
