Lafiel
Sixteen-year-old daughter of the Empress of Humankind Empire Abh and flight trainee on the Patrol Ship Gosroth. Lafiel's mission is to deliver Count Jinto Lin to the imperial capital of Lakfakelle.
Jinto Lin
Seventeen-year-old son of the traitorous leader of the Hyde Star System, Jinto has become Abh nobility because of his father's treachery. Though he holds little interest in politics, Jinto must enter the mysterious world of the Abh and learn their customs in order to fulfill his duties as an Imperial nobleman.
Baron Febdash
The crazed baron of an obscure domain, Febdash is insecure about his standing with the royal family and hopes to use Lafiel to extort a position of greater influence from the Empire.

The loyal vassal of Baron Febdash who reevaluates her loyalties when Lafiel visits Febdash Territory.
Marca
Leader of a poorly-organized resistance cell on Planet Clasbul who wants her own spaceship. When her planet is captured by the United Mankind, she assists Jinto and Lafiel in their escape.
Inspector Entryua
A dedicated and earthy police inspector on Clasbul who chafes under the occupation by the United Mankind.
Kyte
A genetically engineered human from the United Mankind who resents the Abh and all they stand for.
Admiral Spoor
An unorthodox but brilliant Abh military leader whose duty it is to minimize losses in the onslaught from the United Mankind and its allies.

Hiroyuki Morioka is an acclaimed science fiction author, well-known for his Crest of the Stars and Banner of the Stars novels.
The manga version of The Seikai Trilogy is illustrated by Toshihiro Ono, well known for his manga adaption of Pokemon.
The manga script was adapted from the novel by anime writer Aya Yoshinaga.
Later, the illustration of the manga was taken over by Wasoh Miyakoshi, known for his short series Wind Plus.

I have the manga and I thought it was interesting but the anime really fleshs things out nicely.

It's actually surpirsingly good. I checked it out from my library and now I wish they had the rest of the volumes.

A really great read for those who are fans of solid science fiction. the characters are all well written and the world nicely fleshed out. A good adaptaion of the anime.
