In this alternate-reality fantasy world, there exist normal human beings...as well as others that possess animal-like characteristics. These mysterious beings (called +Anima) are shunned by "normal" society. The story focuses on four of these special beings: Cooro (a crow), Husky (a fish), Senri (a bear) and Nana (a bat). These four friends travel to not only find others like themselves, but to also gain acceptance in world cruel to anyone or anything that is different.

Cooro
Orphaned as a child, Cooro is the wide-eyed, naive leader of the four. Because of his black wings, many people that see him consider him bad luck or an omen of misfortune.

Husky
Rude, handsome, yet serious (as well as a hater of girls), Husky is the exact opposite of Cooro. Even though his past is shrouded in mystery, deep down he's a good person.

Nana
The last of the four to join the group (as well as the only girl) Nana is a lonely girl with a very sad past. Abused by an alchoholic father, Nana is tormented by the memories of her father's abuse. In fact, it was after she stabbed her father with a pair of scissors and he chased her with a knife that she suddenly changed into a bat +Anima for the first time. But until she fully deals with the past, she finds comfort in being with her new friends.

Senri
The oldest and most mysterious of the group, Senri is a man of few words. He is in constant possession of a mysterious book that he holds very dear, and has an affinity for licking blood and collecting flowers.
