That cover art is what we call "false advertising." You obviously don't think much of your readers if you think we can't tell the difference between good art and bad art.

Hello, there are copies of this series available for swap on Mangatude.com if you want to get it but dont want to buy it...(you just have to trade for 'em instead!:) That way you can check it out-i've read it, it's not too bad!

08.19.2009 12:00 AM

I liked Labyrinth the movie and felt the manga was...well boring and the artwork didnt capture Jim Henson's creation at all. Unlike the Dark Crystal manga which has NOT gotten anymore volumes, was a great in capturing Jim hensons Ideals and needs more books published!!!!

07.20.2009 12:00 AM

idk what everybody is so pissed off about but i love this manga regardless of the art...the story it self does this manga enough justice to compensate for any shortcomings of the artist!!! I have always loved the movie but when i heard tha there was a sequel and in a manga i almost died!!! this is what ive been waiting for-for over a decade!!! thank god there was another tard out there who understood the passion and decided to give the film a proper conclusion!!!

07.12.2009 12:00 AM

Just by reading the comments makes me not want to read it. I love the move it was one of the best moves I have ever wached. I guess ill read it but if I dont like it I wont be as dramatic as Newatredes. If I dislike it ill keep it to myself.

07.06.2009 12:00 AM

No. Bad Tokyopop. Labyrinth was a classic, one that you have no claim to. Whoever thought this was a good idea should be fired. And I for one will not be buying from Tokyopop for a long time. -1 customer. And to Fairyqueenmeissa; umm, no. There's not going to be a sequel. And it's people like you that make me think the human race is doomed.

06.04.2009 12:00 AM

well i love the film, and i was excited when a first heard abiut this manga, but the artwork is not really good, i mean i didnt confuse the cover art, but i expect more of that, and the story at the begining get to catch you but it falls down so terrible about the half, anyway and because i know that the next is better i guess it can entertain foe a while

05.07.2009 12:00 AM

The artwork really does leave something to be desired. Mainly because the artwork has no motion in it. You can't tell if the characters are actually moving or not. In the manga they give you a feeling as if they're moving like robots. Furthermore, where are all the SFX? I see about one "Boom, clack, clack" in every 50 pages. This just makes the artwork more like designs instead of manga.

05.03.2009 12:00 AM

Wow...i hav 2 agree w/ WAKAME...the lack of artwork is quite disappointing. The coverwork was very eye-catching, but the work itself (and I being just putting it bluntly) sucked.

04.17.2009 12:00 AM

For such a gorgeous cover, the internal art is decidedly lacking. I was going to purchase this manga at the local B&N, but when I flipped through, I was very very disappointed in the style of the art. I'm sure it would be rather nice for some other comic, but it doesn't do justice to Jim Henson and especially not to the genius designs of Brian Froud. The surprising lack of detail astounded me. Why give it such an eye-catching cover, but then disappoint vastly with the comic art itself? I loved the Labyrinth movie so much and I had such high hopes for the manga adaptation. Sadly, it was so awful that I couldn't bring myself to read it. Thusly, I did not rate the story. Just the art. Manga and comics are about half and half, but you have to be able to look at it to read it.

04.11.2009 12:00 AM

I looove the labyrinth movie but so far i am NOT impressed with the manga. I wanted some cool edgy art that matched the quirkyness of the original movie but no... And why is the goblin king so lame? I had such a huge crush on him....David Bowie's bad teeth and all... And sara has grown up in something of an unflattering way. JC does NOT look like that! Jim Henson is SO rolling in his grave. I have to go watch the movie now ...Chilly down with the wild gang! Wee!

03.20.2009 12:00 AM

very steki hai.

03.18.2009 12:00 AM

02.15.2009 12:00 AM

I personaly love the movie. My parents gave it 2 me on 12/25/08.I was soo happy that I kept watching it.Now I just can't wait 2 c the the 2nd movie of the Labyrinth.Does anyone know when that is?If so please do tell.I;m really anxious 2 know.Ohh and the manga books r great can't wait 4 volume 3.Well c u.

01.16.2009 12:00 AM

I really enjoyed Labyrinth the movie, and the cover of the manga is beautifully done. However, once opening it, I was immediately turned off. It's personal preference, but I don't really like american style comic art, and I was hoping that for such a mysterious and twisty theme such as the Labyrinth would be given equally intriging artwork. This makes a huge factor in deciding whether to buy, or just read it and not buy. If the manga had been done by the Alichino mangaka (cover art artist) or a similar artist, I would definitely buy and add to my collection. In this case, I'd probably search for the cover art and buy prints instead. Her Jareth is exactly how I pictured him being, and the original costume design of Jareth in the movie is very much like artists in Visual-Kei bands. Even his makeup would completely suit it.

01.12.2009 12:00 AM

Toby and Jareth together would be AWESOME.

11.11.2008 12:00 AM

At least I like the cover picture of Jareth. He's still hot on the cover. And isn't that Toby wearing that cool outfit? >_< (Pervy thoughts enter head.) What if Jareth and Toby end up togeather?... Yay YAOI!!!

10.15.2008 12:00 AM

this is amazing[: i am in love with the movie and jareth [david bowie] how many volumes are there gonna be?

10.15.2008 12:00 AM

yes yes, we all realize that theyve changed jareth to a sniveling wimp, but look at the bigger picture. jareth spent YEARS obsessing and planning for sarah, he had a perfect plan and it was shattered. i can understand why he lost his zeal, his willpower. so just wait and read and see what happens

09.30.2008 12:00 AM

this is just a discrace to the movie! :@ they totaly ruined it and the art sucks!

09.22.2008 12:00 AM

Everyone keeps complaining about the art, and I agree it's terrible. I have greater concern with where the story is going. Toby is an obvious choice for passing the torch, but why is he an inept slacker. Sarah was heroic because she was clever and determined. She didn't want to be stuck babysitting because she had this lush innerworld of fantasy. Toby doesn't want to do his homework because he'd rather play videogames. It's not just Lie who's turned Jareth into a hiddeous drag queen, it's Forbes. Where are all Jareth's clever retorts? Instead we get lines like "Don't worry, I won't peek," when Toby takes a bath. Yuck. Everyone who is saying how great this is will be sorry when Lie and Forbes kill off a favorite chracter or do something terrible and permanent to the cannon.

09.05.2008 12:00 AM

I like the movie AND the manga!

08.21.2008 12:00 AM

I was so excited for this title because I am a HUGE Labyrinth fan, but this was nothing but a dissapointment. Seriously, WHO KEEPS HIRING CHRIS LIE? He is absolutely talentless! You can't tell me there aren't hundreds of people out there, who can actually *draw*, that wouldn't have loved to take on this project. For the love of God give him a janitorial position or something. Drawing very obviously just isn't his thing. The women look like trannies, the men look like even uglier trannies, and his range of facial expressions goes from "stoned" to "stoned and a bit sleepy". Don't even get me started on his obsession with tones. He should have just put his poorly drawn characters on a completely gray backdrop and have done with it. Please, Tokyopop, STOP HIRING THIS GUY. PLEASE.

I am curious about this manga but I hope it doesn't become a movie. 1986 has come and gone plus no one can play the Goblin King other than David Bowie and hes not as sexy as he was when he was younger. So lets just enjoy what tokyopop has given us. I do like the art but wish it was a little more unique.

06.29.2008 12:00 AM

The links to the chapters are messed up(even in the viewer) So the only chapters u can see are 1 and 2, if you click 2 it takes u to 1, and if u click 3 it takes u to 2. The story's interestin and the art is not to bad(it's really good when it comes to the labyrinth and its creatures), but too bad the cover artist didn't draw the people. I like that style better.

06.24.2008 12:00 AM

INUCHIC15~ It comes out Nov. 4, 2008! I'm so excited

06.15.2008 12:00 AM

*sigh* The story seems promising, but the art isn't. I don't really care if the artist is new at this or not. They should have selected other artist for the job. Now, I'm not saying the artist is HORRIBLE, what I'm saying is that his art style looks better for Naruto, or Bleach. For a Labyrinth manga I was hoping for art style similar to Princess Ai's Misaho Kujiradou or Tinity Blood's Kiyo Kyujyo.

When is Volume three coming out?

04.11.2008 12:00 AM

I love Jennifer Connelly :)

04.07.2008 12:00 AM

i agree with lika about the art, but guys do buy this. i wish they would have had kouyu do the art in it[ the creator of alichino, and the person who drew the front cover. but the stiory is good. that bummed me out i saw the cover an said i have to get this and opened it up an my happieness faded an may have died a bit, i really hope that kouyu makes her own version X3

03.19.2008 12:00 AM

am waiting for volume three.....

03.14.2008 12:00 AM

Even in comics Jareth is STILL HOT AS EVER. Yes I think David Bowie was extremely attractive in the movie. Even if hes a crusty geezer now. :D He's like Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, even old and crusty they're still dashing. ;3

03.12.2008 12:00 AM

After the end of volume 2, my unhappiness with the direction Sarah went in has wained & now I'm quite curious to see how things work out in volume 3. No offense to the artist, but they should have gotten a female illustrator or even a guy who knows how to draw art that appeals to women. You think men are going to buy this book?

02.22.2008 12:00 AM

I love the book of Return to the Labyrinth. Like what Laura Wolf said, I also hope this would lead to another movie.

02.20.2008 12:00 AM

Yes that is a question i would like to the answer to as well, it's no fair. Furthermore, commeting on this comic, i didn't reli like the story that much or the art for that reason. I think the cover is the only good drawing. Maybe i'll watch the video, if i can find it lol. Btw, wat manga comics do u guys have? Would luv to know email me at whistlebird56@hotmail.co.uk and lets keep in touch. x

User Reviews
The strength of the manga is not what it borrows from the film, but what it builds on top of it. The new characters and possibilities excite me a lot more than the cameos. The background is rich with possibilities; the few details we get only whet the appetite for more. 4/5

Writer Jake T. Forbes manages to write a story that makes Jim Henson’s Return to Labyrinth feels as if it belongs in the same world as the movie. Chris Lie is a good storyteller and his art is a good cartoon version of the wonderful design work Brian Froud did for the original film. I think readers will like Return to Labyrinth as much as they did the film.

Fans can pick this book up without fear. In no time you're going to hear David Bowie's music flowing through the background, as well as a couple Frank Oz voices thrown in for good measure. This continuation of the story is mindful of the source material, but unafraid to strike out and cover some new ground as well. Even without Jennifer Connelly, this is still a great book that fans of the original are sure to love. (rated a "Must Read"!)

Fans of the original will enjoy the faithfulness to the world of Labyrinth—familiar characters and places all make a comeback—while newcomers can look forward to a richly detailed universe filled with peculiar creatures.

Nothing but Cameos Do Not a Sequel Make

While a few fans seem to love this, I personally have been very disappointed with this manga. Other than the absolutely gorgeous cover art by one of my favorite artists(Kouyu Shurei), this manga is overall...poorly done. Beware, spoilers within.

The Goblin King has kept a watchful eye on Toby, his minions secretly protecting the child... Legions of goblins work behind the scenes to ensure that Toby has whatever his heart desires, preparing him for the day when he will return to the Labyrinth and take his rightful place beside Jareth as the heir to the Goblin Kingdom...

That day has come...

But no one has told Toby.

Jareth, the Goblin King – The mysterious Jareth doesn’t particularly like ruling over goblins—it’s just the role he’s always had. Still striking in appearance and demeanor, lately Jareth has been keeping to himself, and there are whispers of a strange ailment afflicting him.

Hana – A faerie who lost her wings. She’s feisty with a short fuse. In order to keep pace with her larger companions, she rides on top of a furry little creature named Stank.

Skub – A small, pudgy goblin with a squished, pig-like face, Skub was one of the Goblins sent to find Toby, and he’s latched onto him, serving him obsequiously.

Moppet – A human girl who has lived in the Labyrinth for as long as she can remember. Because she looks different from all of the goblins around her, she feels insecure and tries to hide her human features with a poorly made goblin mask on her nose and a wig.

Spittledrum – A pompous Goblin bureaucrat who for years has handled the day-to-day affairs of the Labyrinth while Jareth played his games. When Jareth announces his retirement, Spittledrum assumes that the crown would fall to him.

Candlewic – An elite goblin warrior. As far as goblins go, he’s quite handsome, but he’s allied with Spittledrum.

Mizumi, the Queen of Cups – Mizumi is the Queen of the Kingdom of Moraine, a neighboring kingdom to Jareth’s realm. However, while Moraine is vast, Mizumi has her sights on the Labyrinth.

Moulin – Mizumi’s beautiful daughter. Moulin wears a form fitting long dress and carries an umbrella. Rain follows her wherever she goes.

Drumlin – Mizumi’s not-so-beautiful daughter. Drumlin is an unsightly blob of a woman who always seems to be thirsty.

Esker – Mizumi’s most deadly assassin. Esker cannot speak and he shows no emotions.

Sarah Williams – Toby’s older sister. Twelve years ago, she had to rescue her baby brother from the Labyrinth. Now 26 years old, she’s written her adventures off as daydreams.

Hoggle – A dwarf who once helped Sarah work solve the Labyrinth and rescue baby Toby. Now, Hoggle is Prince of the Land of Stench, a title given to him (much to his dismay) by Jareth after Sarah kissed him.

Sir Didymous – A fox-like knight who is brave and whose sense of smell is keen. His mount is an Old English Sheepdog named Ambrosius.

Ludo – A shaggy beast with a heart of gold. His people are Stone Singers, able to communicate with and manipulate rocks.

Jake T. Forbes (writer) – Jake T. Forbes has served as editor and English-language localizer for an unhealthy amount of manga, including the bestselling series Chobits, Fruits Basket and Fullmetal Alchemist. In addition to manga, he has written for various and sundry periodicals and is presently a Quest Writer for massively-multiplayer online games. He dreams of a day when Pikmin and Fraggles can coexist, but until that time, he lets the Fraggles live under his bed.

Chris Lie (artist) – Chris Lie was an award-winning comic artist in Asia for years before coming to the United States and obtaining a Masters degree in Sequential Art from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2005. Since then, he has achieved notoriety as an artist on such books as G.I. Joe Sigma 6, Arashikage Showdown and Josie and the Pussycats, and continues to achieve success in this new chapter of his career.

The Jim Henson Company - The Jim Henson Company, an established leader in family entertainment for over 50 years, is recognized worldwide as an innovator in puppetry, animatronics and computer graphics. Best known as creators of the world famous Muppets (the rights to which are now owned by The Walt Disney Company), Henson is the recipient of nearly 50 Emmy Awards, nine Grammy Awards and two Oscar Awards. Credits include the Saturn Award-winning "Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars" and the features "Five Children and It," "Good Boy" and "MirrorMask". The company also produced the television feature "The Muppets' Wizard of Oz" for Buena Vista Television. Headquartered in Los Angeles with offices and production facilities in New York and London, the company has most recently completed post-production on its first fully-animated project, "Frances." The Jim Henson Company's website is located at: www.henson.com

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a Jim Henson fan. Some of my earliest memories were of watching The Muppet Show on TV with my father. I remember going to see The Muppet Movie and The Great Muppet Caper in the local movie theater with my parents, and of course, there’s always been Sesame Street, which my own son now watches and laughs at, in much the same way that I did as a tyke.

I’m a fan of all Jim Henson’s work, but my personal favorites were his dips in the fantasy genre. I absolutely love The Dark Crystal. Even now, it still remains one of my favorite movies of all time. However, it was his follow-up film, Labyrinth, that really sealed the deal for me. While The Dark Crystal took us on a journey to a fantasy world, Labyrinth brought the fantasy world to us by allowing it to spill over into our world. For the first time, we saw the Jim Henson Creature Shop’s elaborate fantasy creatures (inspired by the work of legendary fantasy artist Brian Froud) interacting with human actors. And for a boy of ten, it made it seem entirely plausible that one day a goblin could come running out of my closet and I could find be pulled into the world of Labyrinth myself.

And now, twenty years later, I have. Return to Labyrinth is the official continuation to Jim Henson’s visionary film. Our story has been written in collaboration with The Jim Henson Company, and our script is by the uber-talented Jake T. Forbes, who may just be a bigger Labyrinth geek than I am. The lively manga art is by the gifted Chris Lie, and our beautiful cover comes courtesy of Alichino manga-ka, Kouyu Shurei. This time, Toby (the baby in the movie) is our protagonist, and we learn that Jareth’s interest in Toby in the film may have been more than just his way of getting Sarah into the Labyrinth. (But never fear, Sarah/Jareth fans! We have some stuff that you’re going to LOVE coming up in later volumes.)

Working on this first volume has been a fun trip into a world that I loved so much as a child. It’s a journey I’ve waited a long time for, and at last we’re ready to depart. Care to join me?
