Twelve Kingdoms, The - Hardcover Edition Volume 2

Born in Japan and raised as a human, Taiki is overwhelmed when he's brought back to the kingdom of Tai, where he's told he's a kirin. With little knowledge or guidance, he must trust his latent instincts to choose a king for the Kingdom of Tai from among dozens of men and women who seek the position. Will the frustrated Taiki, who can't even figure out how to transform into animal form, make the right choice? And more important, will he discover the kirin that lives within?

The anime and novel follow two different routs on the same plot. The anime focuse on Youko, where as the novel dosent. Even the other stories involve Youko to some extent, where as in the novels they don't. I wouldn't say the novel is superior, though it is exceptional. Both are amazing in their own right. The changes made in the anime were essential, otherwise the anime would have been dull and uninteresting.

the release date has been pushed back again. It better be worth it.

...It cut off the rest of my comment for some reason (left HTML bracket maybe?). Anyway... And Taiki's story isn't the only other non-Youko story that the series covers. If you want more of the story without waiting for the books (I wouldn't blame you), check out the anime. While I found Sea of Shadow (in novel form) to be superior to its animated adaptation (episodes 1-13) due to some changes, it's still a great story.

The Twelve Kingdoms novels tell the tales of the Twelve Kingdoms, not just Youko and Kei. Sea of Shadow introduces the world with Youko's story. Sea of Wind will tell Taiki's tale--and it's a great tale, at that. Don't worry, if the anime is any indication, we'll see plenty more Youko in later volumes.
