Wow, this write-up about the manga is really crappy. In fact, it's awful and does the story no justice at all. Makoto Kubota stumbles onto Minoru Tokito one night, and decides to take him home, like a stray pet. Tokito is somehow linked to the mysterious Wild Adapter, and the both of them start to search for answers, while keeping crime lords and other gang members away from Tokito, the seeminlgy only survivor of WA, and who may hold the key to the drug's real power. Seriously, though, this manga is an AWESOME read, and Minekura's sensei's art is gorgeous. And while many fans harp on the similarity of the characters, (Kubota looks a lot like Minekura's Hakkai character from Saiyuki) this series was actually written first, and is actually ongoing, as it has a new volume coming out in Japan next Feb. 2008. Anyway, give it a try, if guns, drugs, and the yakuza aren't your thing, hop on board for the mystery and sexual tension between Kubota and Tokito. You won't regret it!

I loved Saiyuki, but honestly I wasn't so sure about this one. The characters were drawn soo similar to Saiyuki... A friend bought it and informed me that I had to read it (I have a weakness for Yakuza stories, or yanki stories, Kamikaze Girls, Moonchild, Gungrave) A few pages into it was hooked. The storylines original and a mystery of twists and turns, I can't wait to finish reading vol.2

Makoto Kubota wandered through life, not taking things too seriously or looking too deep within himself. His job as the head of the Izumo Group's youth gang kept him pleasantly occupied with yakuza wars, mahjong and assassinations...Until the day he stumbled upon a strange drug called Wild Adapter that produces bizarre side-effects--including death. Forever changed, Kubota becomes entangled with a drifter named Minoru Tokito, and the two form an unlikely companionship that draws them deeper into the mystery of Wild Adapter... From the creator of Saiyuki comes a manga in the film noir tradition, full of intense action, wild assassins and mysterious, amnesiac strays.

Although she is best known for her first hit, the 1997 series Saiyuki, Kazuya Minekura published many other manga such as Stigma and Wild Adapter before and during Saiyuki's run. Her current project is Saiyuki Reload, the continuing adventures of Genjyo and his motley tribe of misfits.
