Undertown Volume 1

Meet Sama, a 10-year-old boy who is so sad that tears have literally stained his cheeks. Sama's father has had a heart attack...and doctors give him a month to live. With his teddy bear in tow, Sama crawls under his bed and finds a magical portal to a strange realm called Undertown. What is this dark new world? To find out, Sama begins a journey through the depths of Undertown...where he searches for The Sugar Stone, a magical object that might be able to save his dad!

Once upon a time, bearded wizard Jim Pascoe and fresh-faced Jake Myler both lived in Los Angeles. The three of us would get together, scrutinize over Jake's thumbnails, debate Jim's script, and explore the world of Undertown together. These were exciting times. We all felt like we were creating something special. But then tragedy struck--Jake Myler moved to Seattle. It broke my heart, to be honest. He used to bring us cake!

Luckily, Jake Myler is as talented as he is thoughtful. He finished the book while working in rainy Seattle, and his art is absolutely breathtaking. Every page is as delicious as the tasty treats he used to bring to our story sessions. And Jake's character designs are all absolutely brilliant. Without exception. Once you read Undertown, I promise there are images that will stay in your mind long after you put the book down. Thanks for making this project memorable in so many ways, Jake!

And then there's Jim Pascoe. Rock star. Rebel. Guru. In high school, he was probably voted most likely to become a cult leader. But this would be the coolest cult in the world--full of crazy ideas and good vibes. Jim's Undertown script has more layers than any of the cakes that Jake happily fed us. It can certainly be read as a dark fantasy story in the tradition of Alice in Wonderland or The Wizard of Oz...but it you look closely, you can see many parallels to the complex, strife-filled world in which we currently live. Take sugar, for instance. Sure, it's the reason Jake's cakes were so yummy...but in the world of Undertown, sugar can be read as a metaphor for oil.

Okay, enough words! It's time to feast on Undertown! Satiate your sweet tooth on Jake's scrumptious art...and fill your belly (and head) with Jim's rich, flavorful narrative.

I can't say I like how the manga pages are displayed in the comics section of the LA Times. You can't do justice to any manga in that format, in my opinion.

Hey Jim Pascoe!! EXCELLENT story, if anything, this is what will commence my reading of Manga style books :P The story was very captivating, and a lot more interesting the usual Naruto style stuff. Jake has drawn art for me before, so I'm accustomed to his brilliance :D This book is definitely some of his finest work! PROPS TO BOTH OF YOU!! To Jake: This is oolude56 ;)

Undertown needs to be a MOVIE!! a MOVIE!! Or at least an anime. There is so much in it that it took me like a week to read! GREAT manga. Great.

Thanks, JONMON! The next volume of UNDERTOWN will come out in 2008. Please join the Undertown Explorers clan to be the first to know when we have an official date! And as we get closer we may have some surprise previews. The pages from book two that I've seen look SO good! Can't wait to share them with you all!

yay this was awesome dose any one know when the next one comes out

10.06.2007 05:25 PM

I picked this one up today at a book sale. It was pretty good. It's got everything a good manga needs: Magic- Check! Plot- Check! Fights- Check! Someone wanting to get the next volume- Check! I'm definatly getting Volume 2 when it comes out! I, at first, was confused by it, as I thought it was some Shojo thing. Then I was relieved that I was wrong. I had no idea fuzzy animals were so... so violent! I mean, who didn't like it when Broom transformed his broom into a missle launcher and blew up some of the Insurgents!? Overall, great book, great plot, great characters.

Thanks, jonnerbloo! Any comparison to Labyrinth is a good one. I'm very excited about the new DVDs of Labyrinth and Dark Crystal. As for the sequel to UNDERTOWN ... it comes out in 2008, most likely in the fall.

09.01.2007 10:04 AM

Oooh I'm gonna read that! XD

08.28.2007 05:14 PM

Hey. I enjoyed the book. Sort of like that old movie 'Labyrinth' set to the pattern of an action/adventure video game. When will the sequel be out?

08.16.2007 05:51 PM

I hope everyone enjoys this book. Jake and I really put a lot of love into these pages. We love to hear your comments -- tell us what you think, and ask questions. We'll be sure to make up interesting responses.

07.15.2007 08:06 AM

This is a great book dog, nice work.

07.15.2007 07:49 AM

It was really a joy to create this book, but I can't hardly believe that it'll be out in less then a month! August 7th! Plus it was a nice surprise to read a preview for 'Legends of the dark crystal' which makes an appearance in the back of the book. I couldn't think of another property that better fits the general vibe of Undertown. So please pick this on up!
