The rest of the week was sadly boring, with nothing exciting going on. Maya and I had gotten use to the usual schedule of our classes. By the time Friday came along, we were able to identify, if not remember the faces of nearly everyone in the school. In P.E., everyone already knew not to hand me the ball, including Maya. Apparently, they had also learned to step in front of us, just in case the other team attempted to benefit for our Achilles’ heel. Thankfully, we both remained on the side lines, away from everyone else.
Once again neither Daniel Ronins nor William Kleins came back to school, and it was becoming irritating to Maya and I. Everyday we watched nervously as while the rest of the Kleins and Ronins came into the cafeteria without them. After they came in and we didn’t see Daniel and William with them, we both relaxed and decided to join in the conversation that was taking place at our table. They were talking about an upcoming party that was going to take place at the Port Royal marine resort in three weeks that Matthew and Martin were planning as a friendly get together for all of us to just enjoy ourselves. Maya and I were invited to come; of course Heather and Jennifer were coming too. We had decided to go to the outing out of kindness, rather then tell them we didn’t want to go, which would have been rude. The seaside resort was supposedly going to be cool, instead of dry that day. Weren’t beach resorts suppose to be humid with sunny weather?
When Friday came around Maya and I were more accustomed to coming into the biology lab without worrying if Daniel and William would be there. They probably transferred to another school, we weren’t sure, but we couldn’t ignore the feeling that we were the cause of their nonappearance at school.
The first weekend I had in Mobile since I was little went by before I knew it, and throughout the first part of the weekend I stayed at the house while Tony, who wasn’t accustomed to spending his weekends alone in his frequently vacant house was at work. This meant I had the house all to myself. I cleaned the house, did my Biology and English homework way ahead of time, and then sent my mom and Maya more phony optimistic e-mails, though I doubted miya was buying anything I was saying in my e-mails at all. I drove to the library on Saturday, there were tons of bookstores all around, but sadly none of them had anything that I was interested in. I made a promise to myself that I’d take a trip to West Hill, or Allenvile shortly and hopefully, find a bookstore that didn’t just have ten-year old copies of books on their shelves. I speculated lazily how many miles I could drive my car without it needing gas, and I shivered slightly at the thought. I mean my car had great parts in it, but it was just that I was worried that it wouldn’t be able to take me to West Hill without me having to use up a lot of gas to get there.
It didn’t rain much throughout the weekend, which meant it was quiet and I was able to sleep without much disturbance, except when Tony came home in the morning, but other then that I had a good many hours of much needed sleep.
On Monday I was surprisingly welcomed by tons of other teens in the parking lot. I had no idea who any of them were, so I just waved at them and smiled back at everyone politely. It was slightly colder today then it had been last week, without the rain showing its depressing face in the sky. When I saw miya waiting for me by the front doors of the school, I smiled at her and she smiled back at me happily after we talked for a little while about how our weekends had been, we both headed off to our separate first periods. In English, Matthew took his usual seat next to me as if it was his throne. We had a pop quiz over The sound of Music. It was fairly basic, and very clear-cut.
Overall, I felt more so at ease then I had been feeling since my first day at Mobile High. More at ease than I could have ever anticipated feeling in this dark town.
When class had let out to allow everyone to go to their next period, the air was filled with tiny clouds of white that looked like marshmallows. I could hear everyone talking enthusiastically about it around me. Suddenly I felt the wind bite at my nose, my ears, and my cheeks, causing them to turn pink.
“Whoa it’s snowing emma, look it’s snowing.” Matthew said to me happily.
I stared at the fluffy cotton balls that were dancing around in the air, and landing silently like the night on the sidewalk as they blew pass my face without a sound.
“Yay snow.” I said sarcastically. Well my good Monday is ruined.
Matthew looked at me questionably “You don’t like snow Emma? He asked me as he stared at me in confusion as to why I was acting like I didn’t like snow.
I shook my head at him and I let out a sigh “It’s not that I don’t like, it’s just that now that means there won’t be any rain for awhile.” Which I knew was obvious, because of the snowy weather. “I mean I thought snow is usually in flakes, each one different from all of the others. These… they all look like cotton balls that you’d find at a grocery store.
“I think the snow looks different because of the fact that we live in Mobile that’s all.” He said in a matter-of-fact like voice.
I sighed and merely nodded my head in agreement “Yeah I guess so.” I said as I continued staring at the white cotton that was falling to the ground in front of me.
Matthew laughed happily. Suddenly a huge, watery ball of wet snow whacked Matthew in the back of his head. Just then miya comes out of nowhere and she says in a calm voice as she started gathering up bits of the white slushy stuff that was on the sidewalk “Hey Arthur?” Surprisingly, Arthur turned toward us and he called back with an annoyed look on his face “What miya?” Suddenly miya smirked and then she threw the snowball, or whatever she had made the watery white stuff into at Arthur. The snowball went wham, hitting him dead in the face, but instead of him gathering up bits of snow and firing at back at miya, he started walking the other way, which wasn’t in the direction of his next period at all. Matthew and I looked at her in shock; we both wondered how she was able to hit Arthur so accurately when he was so far away from us. Suddenly miya and I see Matthew gathering up the snowy mess into his hands as he sees Arthur walking off. We both sighed as we started to head to World History together.
“Umm I’ll guess we’ll see you at lunch okay Matthew?” I said with a sarcastic look on my face. “Believe me once everyone’s throwing food or snow at each other, that’s when it’s time for me to leave.” I said as miya and I started heading towards World History while looking back at Matthew.
Matthew said nothing and merely gave us each a nod and kept his eyes on Arthur’s recoiling form.
By the time World History came around Miya was flaming mad and I knew why too. The same dark-skinned boy that had bumped into her yesterday on the stairs was staring at her again.
Mr. Rothfield noticed this and he walked over to Miya and asked her softly, his dark-brown eyes filled with concern and worry. “How’s your leg Maya?”
“It’s fine now Mr. Rothfield thank you for your concern.” I heard Miya say to Mr. Rothfield while her eyes were still locked on the dark-skinned boy.
I could that she really did want to beat him up right now but thankfully, I stopped me; saving the dark-skinned boy from taking a one-way trip to the E.R. during school today. But I knew she was still furious right now but she gladly took her seat next to me in the back of the room, since Mr. Rothfield said we could sit there as long as we did our work.
“Alright class today we’re going to all talk about the incident that had occurred yesterday when you all left the classroom. That’s right. It seems that one of your classmates, Ms. Maya Shaw tripped on the stairs yesterday and no one bothered to help her. All of you should be ashamed off yourselves, especially you Jordan. If you hadn’t been so concerned about getting out of the classroom then Maya wouldn’t have fell on you and then she wouldn’t have bumped into Erica over here.” Mr. Rothfield said firmly as he pointed to Erica, who was fixing her makeup in her small compact mirror. His eyebrows were knitted together to show that he was upset but he didn’t raise his voice though.
I saw some of the kids laugh at this but then I saw David, the boy from Miya’s BCIS class threw paper balls at the kids and they glared at him. I saw her silently whispered a thank you to him and he smiled at her.
I smiled at David for sticking up for Miya and he flashed a perfect smile at me, but his eyes were on Miya and I saw her blush slightly but said nothing to him.
“I believe Erica and Jordan owe Maya an apology and if you two don’t apologize then you both have detention.” Mr. Rothfield said in an annoyed tone as he locked his eyes on Erica and Jordan, who both glared at Miya in anger, but thankfully, I stood in front of me protectively and I saw her silently thank god I was her friend and I thanked him too.
Erica walked over to Miya and she said in a smug like voice “Sorry but you should’ve watched where you were going instead of being so wrapped up in your thoughts freak.” She said as she flipped her long butterscotch-blonde hair. Miya glared at her from behind me and Erica jumped slightly but then went back to doing her makeup.
“Man she owes me an apology for stepping on my shoes. These shoes cost a lot of money. So it’s her fault for not watching where she was going.” I heard Jordan say in an annoyed tone as he glared at Miya.
I felt angered by the fact that he said it was Miya’s fault for what had happened yesterday as did David and Mr. Rothfield. He was saying it was her fault that his shoes were messed up. I glared at him and I could tell that Miya wanted so badly to beat him up but I saw her restraining herself from doing what her body wanted to do so badly to Jordan. She probably wanted to slam his head into the computers and then break both his arms and legs into five different places but she knew that was wrong. To calm herself down and not let anyone see her anger that was threatening to be unleashed right now I saw her walk out of the classroom, shaking with anger and she slammed the door loudly, hoping to scare Jordan but I knew it didn’t help her anger one bit.
I walked out of the room after her, shutting the classroom door shut behind me and she probably thought it was Mr. Rothfield, coming to tell her to calm down but instead she saw me. My eyes were filled with worry and I saw her sigh in relief.
We sat on the steps together and after a while I noticed that she had started to relax but it wasn’t enough to control her rage.
“Emma I hate men.” Miya said to me as she slammed her right fists into her left one.
“I know but don’t worry about it. Besides we only have three more periods to go before lunch. So try to hang in there okay.” I said to her encouragingly but I knew she couldn’t help but fell angry right now.
During the course of the morning, everyone babbled happily about the snow. It seemed that it was the first ever snowfall of the next year. Miya and I sighed and shook our heads while remaining silent throughout the whole thing. Yeah, it was great that it wasn’t raining like it usually did and sure snow was a lot better then rain, but come on. Once snow melts, it just becomes rain again.
Miya and I walked to the cafeteria observantly with Heather and Jennifer after French was over. Slushy balls of wet ice were soaring all around us. I was using my backpack as a shield and miya was using her binder, we were making sure we’d be prepared just in case someone hit us with a surprise snowball attack. Heather and Jennifer both found us utterly comical, but because miya kept glaring at them, it stopped them from hurling snowballs at us themselves.
Matthew and Martin caught up to the four of us when we entered the lunchroom doors, laughing their butts off, while the wet ice flattened their spiky blonde and black hair. Matthew, Martin, Heather, and Jennifer all talked energetically about the snowball fight while we waited in line to get our lunch. I noticed that miya was gazing at the table in the corner of the cafeteria. I followed her gaze and what I saw made me feel instantly cold. I felt colder then the snow outside. There were ten people at the table, instead of the usual eight that miya and I were accustomed to seeing today.
Heather and Jennifer saw that we were staring at the corner table, and they pulled on our arms, trying to get our attention.
“Hey Mimi, Emma? What are you two getting to eat?” they asked us as worriedly.
Miya kept her eyes on the table where Daniel, William and their eight other siblings sat, while I looked down at the floor in embarrassment. Miya said nothing, it was if seeing Daniel and William again didn’t seem to bother her like it bothered me. I mean I had no reason what so ever to feel uncomfortable just because they had suddenly decided to come back to school. Neither miya nor I had done anything wrong.
Matthew and Martin noticed that miya and I weren’t responding to anything they were saying, and they said at the same time “What’s wrong with Emma and Miya, they look pale?”
Miya and I turned towards our four friends and we said at the same time, slightly startling them “Nothing, we’re fine.” “I think I’ll get milk.” I heard miya say as she stared at her jacket, trying to distract herself from Heather and Jennifer’s gaze. “Yeah I’ll just get water okay?” I said adding on to miya’s statement as we moved up in the line.
“You two aren’t gonna eat anything?” Heather and Jennifer asked miya and I as they stared at us with shocked looks on their faces.
Before I could say anything miya said calmly “We just don’t feel well that’s why we’re kinda spacing out.” She said as she continued staring at her jacket, messing with the lent on it to give her something to do instead of looking Heather and Jennifer in the eyes when she spoke. My eyes were still looking down at the floor.
As miya and I waited for Heather, Jennifer, Matthew, and Martin to get their food, I noticed for the first time that miya wore a black cross choker around her neck. It was an onyx-black cross with a red eye in the front of it; at least I think it was an eye. As I stared at her choker, I noticed that it looked like the type that could only be found in old antique store. I was about to ask her where she’d gotten it, but then Heather, Matthew, Martin, and Jennifer started walking towards a random table and miya and I followed behind them.
Once we got to the table and sat down I started drinking my water and miya drank her milk. I felt like my stomach was doing flips inside me. Maya seemed to have turned slightly pale but other then that she looked normal. Three times, Matthew and Martin asked how we were feeling with very pointless need to be worried about us.
Miya and I told them both as politely as we could that there was nothing wrong with us, but we both started to think it would be safer for us to take it easy and if possible retire to the nurse’s office or to the gym for the next two class periods. At this moment Miya and I didn’t feel like going to gym nor Biology if we had to see Daniel and William again. Wait I was being crazy, Miya and I had no reason to be afraid of Daniel and William. I mean they couldn’t do anything to us, so there was no reason for us to act like little kids in front of them.
I looked at the Ronins and Kleins family table once. If they were scowling at us, then we’d both decided to ditch Biology instead of facing our fears. In this case what we feared the most came in the form of two insanely beautiful boys named Daniel Ronins and William Kleins.
I kept my head down on the table, but miya was openly staring at them just as she had the first day of school. Apparently she was unaware that they might be glaring at us. I looked up from the table a little and I glanced at the Ronins and Kleins table just like miya was and three things surprised me. One, none of them were looking in our direction, which encouraged me to lift my head off the table and glance in their direction. Two, they were all laughing. Daniel, Keoni, Rupert, Ron, Jack, and William all had their hair completely drenched with dripping snow that matched well with Daniel’s snow-white hair. Ava, Angel, Esmeralda, and Kanna all moved to the side as Rupert and Keoni shook their soaking wet hair towards them in a playful manner. All ten of them were having fun in the snow just like everyone else- the only exceptions was they looked more like angels that had come down from heaven to play in the snow unlike us.
Aside from their laughter and joking around with each other, the third thing that surprised me was that I noticed that as I observed Daniel closer then normal, his skin looked less pale then it had been before. Miya seemed to have noticed the same thing about William, but she said nothing about it as her gaze stayed on him only. We both also noticed that the sores under their eyes were less visible. Maybe it had to do with the snowy weather, which was probably why they looked so different today. Whatever the reason for their change was, it had miya and me curious to find out what it was. Once again another mystery we had been presented with in the Daniel Ronins and William Kleins’s case.
“Emma, miya, what are you two staring at that’s so interesting?” Heather and Jennifer imposed on our train of thought as they followed our gaze towards the Ronins and Kleins table.
Immediately as soon as Heather and Jennifer looked towards their table, Daniel and William both shifted their eyes to lock with ours.
My head dropped down to avoid Daniel’s eyes, allowing my hair to fall into my face. Miya seemed unintimidated by William’s obvious glare, but she must’ve noticed that I’d stopped staring at Daniel and she dropped her head too. I was absolutely certain of one thing however, in that simple moment that our eyes met theirs they didn’t look unfriendly, nor angry like they had been they last time we’d met them. Instead they looked simply curious just as they had the last time, but this time thankfully without glaring at us.
Suddenly Miya and I heard Heather and Jennifer say at the same time as they giggled in our ears “Daniel Ronins and William Kleins are staring at the two of you.”
Curiosity got the better of us I guess and we asked them without looking up at them “Do either of them look angry, or annoyed?”
Heather and Jennifer shook their heads and they said in confused voices “No, why should they be? We mean do they have a reason to be upset?” Heather and Jennifer asked us calmly.
Miya and I sighed and we said still keeping our heads on the table “They don’t seem to like us too much.” Miya said answering Heather and Jennifer’s question with ease. I didn’t answer them because I still felt nauseous. So to avoid the need to throw up, I put my head on my arm. Miya placed her head on the table as well. I guessed she had a headache. I wasn’t sure, but I didn’t ask her.
“The Ronins and Kleins don’t really like anyone here, or should we say none of them pay any attention to anyone to want to talk and want to be friends with them. By the way their both still staring at you guys.”
“Stop staring at them.” I jeered at Heather.
“Yeah that’s probably why they keep looking over here.” Miya said she hissed at Jennifer and sided with me.
Heather and Jennifer snickered at us, but they did as they were told and stopped looking at Daniel and William. Miya and I looked up from our table to check and see if they had really stopped staring at Daniel and William, promising to use any type of violence deemed necessary if they tried to fight against us.
Luckily for them, Matthew and Martin stopped our little war right there. They were planning an all-out snowball war after school and we were cordially invited. Heather and Jennifer agreed to the snowy war happily. Miya and I could tell by the way they were looking at Matthew and Martin that they weren’t going to disagree with anything they did or said. We sighed and said nothing about it. We both silently agreed to hide in the girls’ locker room until the school parking lot was clear after school today.
Throughout the rest of the lunch period, miya and I kept our eyes on our own table. We sighed and were thankful that today neither Daniel nor William was angry today, so we both decided to go to Biology instead of skipping, like we had originally planned. Miya’s eyes showed that she wasn’t too happy to have to seat with William again, and I hated the idea of having Daniel sit next to me once more. My stomach did upset car-wheels at that thought and my skin turned pale to make matters worse.
As miya and I walked with Matthew and Martin to class, we noticed sadly that they were the main targets for the snowball gunmen- but when we arrived at the front door to the biology lab, everyone aside from me and miya all mourned at the same time as if they were in a choir together. We turned around and we saw that the rain was the cause of their mourning. It was washing away all hints of snow into thin, frosty strips onto the sidewalk and into the sewer that was below us. Miya and I placed our hoods over our heads, silently thankfully that we wouldn’t have to wait in the gym until the school parking lot was clear today. We’d both be able to get home today without any trouble from the snow.
We heard Matthew and Martin let out a long thread of groans and complaints as we made our way to building three,
After we entered the lab, we both saw with great relief that the seats next to our table were vault. Mr. Thomas was handing out microscopes and boxes of slides to each table. Class wasn’t going to start for another few minutes, which gave Miya and I some time to talk along with every other conversation that was taking place in the classroom. I kept my eyes on my notebook, while drawing random things on the cover, not even once looking at the door. Miya was writing a story; I didn’t know what it was about, so I decided I’d ask her about it later on once we were at home and after I was done with my homework.
Suddenly I heard clear and softly as a wind chime, the chair on my left move. But I ignored it and continued drawing on my notebook cover. I also noticed that the chair on miya’s right moved as well, but miya kept on writing as if she hadn’t noticed the boy sitting next to her at all.
Suddenly we heard two soft, angelic voices that sounded like harps say to us “Hello.”
When we heard the two voices, we both looked up, startled that they were speaking to us. They were both sitting as far apart from us as their desks allowed them to be, but their chairs as we noticed, were turned in our direction. We noticed that their hair was soaked, wild like a lion’s mane. They looked like two movie stars that had just get through with a commercial for bay watch. Their faces were warm and inviting, there were small hints of smiles on their perfectly sculptured lips. But we noticed that their eyes held great caution and we could tell that they were curious about us.
“My name’s Daniel Ronins and this is my brother William Kleins, you two young ladies must be Emma Smith and Miya Shaw.” Daniel said in a silky voice that reminded me of the boy from my dream I had the day I had come to live with Tony in Mobile.
“We’re both very sorry we didn’t get acquainted with one another last week, we weren’t ourselves.” I heard William say as his eyes flashed at me, but they seemed more so focused on miya. Miya blushed causing her eyes to turn pink, which startled me slightly, but Daniel and William didn’t seem surprised by it at all.
Suddenly we both noticed that they had asked us a question and we both blushed furiously. But then it felt like we’d been hit with a ton of dodge balls all at the same time. Wait why were they talking to us? Was all that happened last week a hallucination? Did we imagine the whole thing? They were very well-mannered, just like Tony had said they were. Miya and I stared at each other for a few minutes. We both knew that we would have to respond to them soon, they were waiting on us to answer. Unfortunately, we couldn’t think of anything normal to say without embarrassing ourselves. So we said the first things that came to our minds.
“Umm how do you two know our names?” I asked in nervous voice. I felt like my voice was caught in my throat as I spoke.
I couldn’t think of anything to say anymore, thankfully miya saved me by saying bravely “Umm why is that you two happen to know who we are?” I heard miya say calmly as she stared at me, Daniel, and William. At miya’s question, I saw amusement in William’s eyes and also intrigue in Daniel’s, which were the surprisingly astonishing color of gentle aqua, while William’s were the color of a depressing gray like the rain clouds outside.
At first we thought they were going to get mad at us for miya’s outburst. Instead they both laughed, soft, musical, hypnotizing laughs that made us feel like they were casting spells on us with their laughter and silky smooth voices.
“Well it seems that everyone at school knows the two of you. In fact, we heard that Emma, you’ve been expected to arrive here, so that’s how we know you’d be here. Miya, we heard that you just transferred here from a school in Houston, but you’ve been here your whole life.” Daniel said as he smiled at me, showing his pure white teeth.
Miya and I were shocked that they knew so much about us, and we’d never met them.
The four of us all stared at each other for seemed like a long period of silence. Until we heard miya cough nervously, apparently she was tired of the silence just as much as I was. Finally William spoke and he said casually, as if we were royalty “We know so much about the two of you because the whole town as been waiting for the two of you to return to Mobile.”
Miya and I were speechless, it seemed that Tony must’ve told the whole town I was coming back, but what surprised me was that miya never told me she had been to Houston. Miya noticed that I was staring at her and she said to me quietly, so Daniel and William wouldn’t hear her. “I went to Houston to go visit my family, I told you I was half black remember, and my mom’s side of the family lives in Houston that’s why I went to school there when I was seven and then a few years later I moved back here.” Miya said as she leaned close to me.
Suddenly we heard Daniel ask us “Do you two not like being called Miya and Emma? Its seems like we startled you two when we called you both by those names.” Daniel said as he stared at us with a confused look on his face.
I quickly responded back “No, it’s just that we wanted to know why you two called us Emma and Miya?” I said asking the question that was both on me and miya’s minds.
Daniel and William seemed confused by my question and they both asked me in confusion “Would you two rather we called you Emmally and Maya instead?” They asked us with confused looks in their beautiful aqua and gray eyes.
This time it was miya’s turn to answer “No, we like Miya and Emma just fine. But-“Suddenly miya paused. I guess she couldn’t think of anything else to say.
I sighed and I continued where she left off “But I think Tony, I mean our dads must call us Emmally and Maya behind our backs, or something- seeing as how everyone seems to call us those names here a lot.” I said nervously, I was probably embarrassing myself and Miya right now.
But to our surprise both of them merely said “Oh” and didn’t bring it up anymore- which was a great relief to me and miya.
Since there was nothing else to say, Miya and I turned away from them-feeling embarrassed by the strange silence that was surrounding us.
Fortunately for us, Mr. Thomas began class at that time, allowing us to breathe out a sigh of relief. We tried extremely hard to focus on what he was telling us about the lab we were currently assigned to do. We were suppose to work in groups of four and figure out the different types of plant cells that were in the slides and organize them in alphabetical order along with their scientific names and what plant family they belong to. We weren’t allowed to use our textbooks at all, or else we’d have to do the lab by ourselves. He also told us that he was going to come by to check our progress and whichever group got done first would be allowed to have the rest of the period off.
“Begin.” Mr. Thomas ordered in a calm voice.
“Would you two like to start?” Daniel and William asked they turned to face us. Miya and I were slightly startled by their sudden question as we could only nod our heads in response.
Miya put the box of slides in between the four of us and then she said calmly while facing me, Daniel, and William. “We’ll each do two slides, that way we’ll get done with the lab faster. Do you guys have a problem with that?” Miya asked as she stared at us with a sleepy look in her caramel-brown eyes.
All three of us nodded our heads in agreement and then we all set to work. The first slide had a cell of a lotus flower. It was pink with a white tint in it. As I examined the plant carefully through the microscope I noticed that the cells were moving slowly throughout the plant’s membrane.
I sighed and then I said calmly as I handed the microscope to miya “it’s a lotus plant cell, its scientific name is Nelumbo nucifera and it belongs in the Nymphaeaceae family.” I said while we all wrote down the information on the worksheet that was in the slide box along with the seven remaining slides. I was annoyed with the fact that we had to work in groups of four, but more then that I was annoyed that Daniel and William knew stuff about miya and I that no one else knew about us, and this puzzled me. How is that they know so much about us yet, we’ve never met them, let alone talk to them until today? Could they be stalking us secretly or something? I thought to myself as I stared at my desk, trying to distract myself while miya was taking her turn using the microscope.
Once she was done, she called out to us in a bored tone “The plant cell is from a marigold flower, its scientific name is Tagetes spp and it belongs in the Asteraceae family.” She said as she held up the slide that showed a small blue petal inside it. After that William turned to her and he asked her in the same casual tone he had used earlier “May I have look at it?” He said as reached for the microscope. Miya nodded her head and she handed it to him, causing their hands to bush up against one another.
William smiled at miya briefly and then he looked into the microscope and he repeated calmly as he turned to face all three of us. “She’s right. It is a cell from the marigold flower, and it’s scientific name is Tagetes spp and it belongs in the Asteraceae family.” Suddenly that’s when I noticed that she suddenly jumped up as if something had bitten her. I noticed that she was also holding her left hand as if William had scratched her or something. William and Daniel noticed this as well and they both looked at her with concern in their eyes.
Suddenly that’s when it occurred to me that we had caused the whole class to stop what they were doing and stare at us. Miya noticed this and she blushed from embarrassment as she looked around the room and saw that everyone was staring at her. That’s when Mr. Thomas turned to us and he said in calm, yet serious voice “Ms. Shaw please sit down.” Miya said nothing and merely nodded her head as she sat down.
After miya’s surprising outburst we all got back to work and now it was William’s turn. He turned the microscope around and he took out the slide that was in the microscope and he asked miya calmly, but I noticed that he was making sure not to touch her hand again, just in case she would jump up from her seat once more. “Would you please past me slide three?” He asked her calmly without looking at her. Miya nodded her head and she handed William slide three. He looked at it through the microscope and he said once he was done “the cell is Aster, its scientific name is Callistephus Chinensis and the family it belongs to is Asteraceae.” He said plainly, with a bored look on his face.
Then it was Daniel’s turn, his memorizing aqua eyes flashed to the microscope as I handed it to him. In that instant our hands brushed up against each other just as Miya and William’s had just a few minutes ago. When his hand brushed up against mine, it felt like I was touching a freezing block of ice. His fingers were icy-cold like he had been in the deepest parts of Antarctica for a long time. I didn’t want to disturb the class, so I just moved my hand from under his as quickly as I could. But the fact that his hands were icy-cold wasn’t why I had pulled my hand away from his so quickly. I had moved my hand away because it felt like that same electrical shock that I had during lunch came back and it felt like he had shocked me with a magnet when our hands touched. Daniel noticed this and he said apologetically “I’m sorry, I guess my hands must still be cold from the snow.” I shook my head and smiled at him warmly “No it’s not your fault, I wasn’t paying attention, so it’s my fault.” I said as I couldn’t help but smile at him. Daniel smiled at me once more and then he said as he turned to look into the microscope “Slide four please.” He said as he held out his hand. I handed him slide four, making sure our hands didn’t touch at all. As Daniel looked into the microscope, I watched him carefully. His face looked like it had been carved by angels, his hands held the microscope so gently, like he was afraid that if he put pressure on it, it would break into a million pieces.
We each took turns writing down the names of the plants, along with their scientific names and what plant family they belong to.
I felt embarrassed by my handwriting skills, so I allowed miya to write the information down for me. Daniel noticed this and I could’ve sworn I heard him chuckle at my refusal to write on the worksheet and this annoyed me to no end. It only took us twenty minutes to finish them all. Once we were down, the four of us quietly waited until Mr. Thomas came towards our table. I turned to see Matthew and Martin’s table were barely finishing their second
This is the updated part two of chapter two!
