Yes, it may seem to be your average magical girl tale by the cover and title, but overall, this was a really well thought out and well drawn series.  The best thing about the whole series is the ending, which I won't spoil, but it is amazing.  The whole series leads you to think one thing, but the ending is totally different.  I also think the characters are well-rounded, realistic, and different.  Zagato is definatley not your average villian and Clef is wise, but can lose his temper so he's not perfect.  Presia is a very nice character, but she can get a little carried away about thinking how to punish the person (or thing) that has been messing up her study.  Basically, I really enjoyed this series, and I can't wait to read part two!
