Return to Labyrinth Volume 1

The Goblin King has kept a watchful eye on Toby: His minions secretly guiding and protecting the child... Legions of goblins work behind the scenes to ensure that Toby has whatever his heart desires... Preparing him for the day when he will return to the Labyrinth and take his rightful place beside Jareth as the heir to the Goblin Kingdom...

That day has come...

But no one has told Toby.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a Jim Henson fan. Some of my earliest memories were of watching The Muppet Show on TV with my father. I remember going to see The Muppet Movie and The Great Muppet Caper in the local movie theater with my parents, and of course, there’s always been Sesame Street, which my own son now watches and laughs at, in much the same way that I did as a tyke.

I’m a fan of all Jim Henson’s work, but my personal favorites were his dips in the fantasy genre. I absolutely love The Dark Crystal. Even now, it still remains one of my favorite movies of all time. However, it was his follow-up film, Labyrinth, that really sealed the deal for me. While The Dark Crystal took us on a journey to a fantasy world, Labyrinth brought the fantasy world to us by allowing it to spill over into our world. For the first time, we saw the Jim Henson Creature Shop’s elaborate fantasy creatures (inspired by the work of legendary fantasy artist Brian Froud) interacting with human actors. And for a boy of ten, it made it seem entirely plausible that one day a goblin could come running out of my closet and I could find be pulled into the world of Labyrinth myself.

And now, twenty years later, I have. Return to Labyrinth is the official continuation to Jim Henson’s visionary film. Our story has been written in collaboration with The Jim Henson Company, and our script is by the uber-talented Jake T. Forbes, who may just be a bigger Labyrinth geek than I am. The lively manga art is by the gifted Chris Lie, and our beautiful cover comes courtesy of Alichino manga-ka, Kouyu Shurei. This time, Toby (the baby in the movie) is our protagonist, and we learn that Jareth’s interest in Toby in the film may have been more than just his way of getting Sarah into the Labyrinth. (But never fear, Sarah/Jareth fans! We have some stuff that you’re going to LOVE coming up in later volumes.)

Working on this first volume has been a fun trip into a world that I loved so much as a child. It’s a journey I’ve waited a long time for, and at last we’re ready to depart. Care to join me?

I like the movie AND the manga!

I was so excited for this title because I am a HUGE Labyrinth fan, but this was nothing but a dissapointment. Seriously, WHO KEEPS HIRING CHRIS LIE? He is absolutely talentless! You can't tell me there aren't hundreds of people out there, who can actually *draw*, that wouldn't have loved to take on this project. For the love of God give him a janitorial position or something. Drawing very obviously just isn't his thing. The women look like trannies, the men look like even uglier trannies, and his range of facial expressions goes from "stoned" to "stoned and a bit sleepy". Don't even get me started on his obsession with tones. He should have just put his poorly drawn characters on a completely gray backdrop and have done with it. Please, Tokyopop, STOP HIRING THIS GUY. PLEASE.

I have signed copies of "Return to Labyrinth" 1+2. Jake used to work at the same bookstore as i, so i met him a bunch of times :) (even though i was really shy. He is my hero! ) He is a really sweet guy and i really love his ideas for this book. Its hard waiting for the next one to come out!

I am curious about this manga but I hope it doesn't become a movie. 1986 has come and gone plus no one can play the Goblin King other than David Bowie and hes not as sexy as he was when he was younger. So lets just enjoy what tokyopop has given us. I do like the art but wish it was a little more unique.

The links to the chapters are messed up(even in the viewer) So the only chapters u can see are 1 and 2, if you click 2 it takes u to 1, and if u click 3 it takes u to 2. The story's interestin and the art is not to bad(it's really good when it comes to the labyrinth and its creatures), but too bad the cover artist didn't draw the people. I like that style better.

06.24.2008 07:23 AM

INUCHIC15~ It comes out Nov. 4, 2008! I'm so excited

06.15.2008 12:02 PM

*sigh* The story seems promising, but the art isn't. I don't really care if the artist is new at this or not. They should have selected other artist for the job. Now, I'm not saying the artist is HORRIBLE, what I'm saying is that his art style looks better for Naruto, or Bleach. For a Labyrinth manga I was hoping for art style similar to Princess Ai's Misaho Kujiradou or Tinity Blood's Kiyo Kyujyo.

04.11.2008 05:12 PM

I love Jennifer Connelly :)

04.07.2008 05:37 AM

i agree with lika about the art, but guys do buy this. i wish they would have had kouyu do the art in it[ the creator of alichino, and the person who drew the front cover. but the stiory is good. that bummed me out i saw the cover an said i have to get this and opened it up an my happieness faded an may have died a bit, i really hope that kouyu makes her own version X3

03.19.2008 11:50 PM

am waiting for volume three.....

03.14.2008 12:00 AM

Even in comics Jareth is STILL HOT AS EVER. Yes I think David Bowie was extremely attractive in the movie. Even if hes a crusty geezer now. :D He's like Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, even old and crusty they're still dashing. ;3

03.12.2008 04:46 PM

After the end of volume 2, my unhappiness with the direction Sarah went in has wained & now I'm quite curious to see how things work out in volume 3. No offense to the artist, but they should have gotten a female illustrator or even a guy who knows how to draw art that appeals to women. You think men are going to buy this book?

02.22.2008 08:16 PM

I love the book of Return to the Labyrinth. Like what Laura Wolf said, I also hope this would lead to another movie.

02.20.2008 12:27 PM

Yes that is a question i would like to the answer to as well, it's no fair. Furthermore, commeting on this comic, i didn't reli like the story that much or the art for that reason. I think the cover is the only good drawing. Maybe i'll watch the video, if i can find it lol. Btw, wat manga comics do u guys have? Would luv to know email me at whistlebird56@hotmail.co.uk and lets keep in touch. x

01.27.2008 05:18 PM

I would have to say that I was uber excited to read this manga beings such a fan of the movie, The cover art was amazing as was the story however the art inside was disapointing.

01.25.2008 10:35 PM

LOOOOOOOOVE IT!!! Awesome, as always. love Jareth, love Toby, really cool book. gotta read #2

01.23.2008 07:59 AM

My sons name is Jareth from the first movie.

01.15.2008 10:01 PM

love this !!!

01.14.2008 10:30 PM

Personally this is an good manga. Though that art isn't as good as I hope, keep in mind that this guy is learning how to colour and draw the manga way as his other works were American styled. Kept it going and continued the story.

01.07.2008 08:35 PM

same... why can't I see this chapter?

01.06.2008 07:31 PM

Cover 5/5, inside art 3/5 story, well I'll have to read more to see. Original story excellent, movie great, Bowie HOT! as always. :D

01.06.2008 10:22 AM

Mmm, i can't see this chapter, why?

01.05.2008 11:38 AM

Great! I love the movie and the manga

01.05.2008 11:36 AM

I have this book and am now waiting for some money so that I can buy the second. It is a pretty good fanfic and makes me want to read the actual book that the movie was based on. Jareth is so....-swoons- especially in this book because he looks so much younger than in the movie.

12.31.2007 08:08 PM

Lovely movie, lovely concept, and overall a great plot, but the art is, to be repetitive of other reviewers, misleading from the cover art. The cover art is /stunning/ and what lies inside is just...disappointing

12.28.2007 08:31 PM

this is great.

12.21.2007 03:47 PM

Sounds ok and is acceptable.

12.17.2007 11:21 AM

OMG...Sad to say but the art is TERRIBLE! I loved the movie and this manga has a great story but compared to the cover art, which is terrific! The rest of the art just doesnt stand out. They should have had the cover artist do the art!

12.11.2007 07:47 PM

Mmm, sequel? Not quite. An acceptable fanfiction told in manga format, and hooooow can I say no to Jareth in any form? Meowwwwwwwwww!

12.10.2007 04:27 PM

The movie was great, and the storyline of this manga is good, but the art looks.....mediocre. I dunno, it looks like a kid did the art. Blah! Hire the cover artist to do the work!

12.09.2007 07:11 PM

anyone know when vol three is due out? I can't find a release date anywhere.

12.08.2007 07:03 PM

At first when I read this book I was like "Is this Jake Forbs an idiot or what but after I found out about Jareth going to Sarah I Felt I MUST continue Reading all in all though I LOVED IT!!!

12.05.2007 04:55 PM

aww i loved the movie =]

11.29.2007 06:31 AM

it is goog can somone help me i ned friend

11.28.2007 07:22 AM

The Labyrinth being my favorite movie I had to get my hands on this. I wanted to know what would happen to Toby and Sarah, but the covers are so very misleading. I thought the art was going to be better then what it was, how ever i did not let that distract me from the storyline. I give the manga a 4/5. The art could be better, and the storyline is pretty good. Can't wait for the next Vol.

11.27.2007 03:29 PM

love it! i have the movie. this was such a great idea!

11.27.2007 08:36 AM

11.11.2007 12:18 PM

I love the story of Labyrinth, of course, i grew up on it. I love the story, but i'm somewhat disappointed in the art. I'm curious, since i can make my own version, would others care to enjoy it with me?

11.08.2007 01:41 PM

yeah i really like this version as well

11.08.2007 06:37 AM

Yeah i know Jareth looks so good and cute so does toby

11.03.2007 10:04 PM

11.03.2007 11:47 AM

11.01.2007 02:47 PM

Yes, JSOC, that's Jareth, The Goblin King, on the cover of Return to Labyrith volume1, the on holding the crystal, not wearing the crown. Sorry if this comes up twice, I had problems with the first one.
